Unhappy Insulin resistant, but no medication offered

I am incredibly frustrated and depressed about this at the moment. I was diagnosed with PCOS and possible endometriosis years ago. The only medication I am on is Diane-35 BCP.

I recently went for a check-up with my gynae, who suggested I have a blood test for IR as I'm struggling with my weight. Naturally, it came back positive, as my insulin (fasting) was twice the normal amount!

My GP thinks the test is useless, as he says all overweight people will have IR. I'm not sure if this is true or not.

I also have terrible pigmentation under my arms, on my knees, elbows and thighs. I only recently connected this with PCOS, and I think its acanthosis nigricans. It looks just like the pictures i've seen online.

But neither doctor has offered me any medication for it. Both suggested that I follow a low GI diet and try to keep the insulin levels down.

Nothing I do to diet ever seems to work. I've done Weightwatchers, low fat, low carb, low GI. I get discouraged and stop doing it as it doesn't seem to help at all. I generally eat quite healthily though - medium sized portions, and only occasionally chocolates or other 'treats'.

According to my BMI I'm technically obese, but I don't feel like I am. I know I am overweight but I shop at 'normal' clothing stores, not plus size ones. I weigh 93kg (around 200 pounds), I'm 1.65 meters tall, and I wear a size 14 (US size 12) on top and 18 (US size 16) on the bottom. I think I have a lot of muscle mass as well as fat. I excercise at least 3 times a week. I have no other overweight related problems, my cholesterol and blood pressure are both low.

I'm really frustrated. I know metformin works for many of you out there. I don't understand why nobody has offered it to me. Am i not a candidate? Do I need to see an endocrinologist instead of a gynae? Would it help, or does there need to be a different diagnosis for this medication to work?

Please help!

I am overweight and I am not IR, nor do I have high cholesterol or high blood pressure. I do take met and it works for me. Different doctors have different opinions, maybe consult with some other doctors to see what they think. Good luck

i would see the endo. doctor!! I had asked my primary doctor and she just dismissed it like i was crazy. Then I asked my gyno. he wanted me to lose weight....change this and that. How can i lose if I have IR.... So ended up changing to another gyno. he's awesome and he recommended me to the endo. doctor that i see now...he specializes in PCOS. So i started taking the met.
If I were you I'd see an endo. doctor, this is your body and you know what you want. If not I'd persue the subject about taking met more with your current gyno.

It really depends on your GP. If you have a good one, he/she will put you on the right pill. I struggled for 6 months and changed 4 GPs to get my Met. My current GP told me Met is relatively new on treating PCOS, so many old school GPs are not happy with it. Try to change another GP, don't waste your time on the unhelpful ones. According to my experience, in big cities, GPs are more open-minded. My GP in Cardiff was better than the ones in a small Welsh town; and the one in London is better than all previous ones.

Thanks guys. I've been going to the same GP for 20 years, since i was a child. I think its possible that him and the gynae just don't even know that this medication exists. They both told me to lose weight, but as you know, IR makes it incredibly hard to lose weight!!

I'm going to start looking for an endocrinologist who specialises in PCOS.

Oh, and I already live in the 2nd biggest city in my country!

I also have terrible pigmentation under my arms, on my knees, elbows and thighs. I only recently connected this with PCOS, and I think its acanthosis nigricans. It looks just like the pictures i've seen online. AN is a symptom of being insulin resistant.

I spent many years going to different doctors who told me my problems were purely related to being overweight. And if I just lost weight then I'd feel better. But how can you lose weight when it just won't come off!!! I recommend going to an endocrinologists...maybe your current doctor can give you the name of a good one. Make sure to get copies of your test results and bring them with you...it might cut down on the repeat tests they will have to run on you.

Please help!
Good luck!!
