Default Insulin Test & Metformin Help!

So I was diagnosed with PCOS a week and a half ago, by a report of my symptoms alone. My Dr. put me on Metformin and Provera straight away, and ordered a check of my Fasting Insulin Levels. I had the blood work done for the Insulin Test a week later, and everything came back normal. I am wondering if it came back normal because I'd already been on the Metformin for a week (and the Provera-- which can alter your blood sugar according to the Rx label) but have been assured that that's "probably" not the case.

I don't understand how an insulin sensitizing medication has no influence on an insulin test. Is it all out of your system within a few hours? So I asked the nurse who delivered the news if I should continue taking Metformin if my insulin is fine, and she said that I should definitely keep taking it. When I asked why I would keep taking it if I don't have IR she didn't have any answers for me.

In a little over a week I've already lost a few pounds on the Met and with a few tweeks to make my diet a little more GI Index friendly. I don't understand how my insulin could possibly be normal-- I guess that's good news-- but it doesn't help explain why I only get 2 periods a year or rationalize why I should keep taking Met. I've been waiting for the Dr. to get back to me for a couple of days now. Have any of you gone through a similar situation? Have you been asked for an insulin test while on Met?

My Dr. is also pretty adamant that I went on BC right away. I don't start that until after the Provera kicks in an AF-- but the thing is, I don't want to start bc until I know what's really wrong with me! I don't want bc to trick my body into thinking its healthy and working properly if its not! Is that crazy?! I thought I had this whole thing figured out, but now I'm so confused!
