Question Insurance and Metformin?

I know many of you aren't from the States, but I'm curious about something.

My OB/Gyn doctor is really hesitant to prescribe me metformin. In fact, he didn't seem to think that I should have a glucose tollerance test. He said that If I "start gaining weight, then we'll go that route."

That kind of bugged me especially with the possibility that insulin resistence may be the CAUSE and not an effect. I just get tired of people, (doctors included) acting like because I don't have a weight problem my PCOS isn't as big of an issue. Spending an hour a day tweezing hairs from my chin, lip and chest is NOT normal, and not really a good way to spend my time. And acne like I have at 25 is also not normal. Not to mention that we (thin cysters) may still have the same increases in our risk for heart disease and diabetes.

So why isn't managing MY PCOS important?

Anyway, I'll get off my soap box. But anyway, my original question is, since metformin is only approved in the US as an antidiabetic agent, have you had any luck getting your insurance company to pay for it?

to answer your original query...

no problem my insurance is paying without question... (though I'm on Avandamet a mix of Metformin an Avandia) not sure how my doc listed it though? ... I know I was very insulin resistant... he just called me the other day the 'queen of hypoglycemia' :o he likes to throw out odd names like that lol.

(And I am from the U.S. fyi)

My Doc wanted me on Metformin.. then decided instead to try Avandamet.. right away.. after he was sure of my Dx ...

but then he's treated between 2-300 pcos women and he said around 30% of them were thin..

Managing your PCOS IS Important.. find a new doc.. or try to change his mind (the former would probably be easier).

I think mine put mine in as antidiabetic, because when I pick it up the ads that come on the sheet are always for blood sugar testing supplies and diabetic help lines!

I don't care what they think it's for, really, as long as they pay!
