I have a number of the symptoms of PCOS but have yet to be Dx. My husband and I have been trying to conceive but since going off the pill my periods have been extremely irregular, almost nonexistent. My OB has put me on medication, twice now, to kick start my cycle. It seems to work initally, but then nothing. I am concerned about asking my OB to test me for PCOS because I am considering leaving my current employer and I have heard that once Dx, it is difficult if not impossible to get insurance coverage. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I hadn't had confirmed diagnosis at the time I got insurance coverage, but as I'd previously had symptoms of PCOS (hirsutism, excess weight, high testosterone), they have put 'pre-existing condition' limitations (i.e. I can't claim anything PCOS-related for three years on their policy - after that I can have regular coverage). L
uckily I have another health plan through work that reimburses certain percentages of my health bills or my initial specialist visits/scans for my diagnosis would have cost far too much.
Luckily I don't need any kind of fertility treatment or any medication that's expensive (my periods are regular when I'm off the pill, my only medication is that i'm only on a contraceptive pill that costs about $3 for 3 months worth of the pills) or I'd be broke....
From other friends I know who have had PCOS, best thing to do is be up front with whatever insurance company you're going to. If you don't mention you've had previous symptoms, you need coverage later on and they delve into your GP records only to discover you had symptoms before signing up, they're in full rights to deny your claim. I did a fair bit of research into this before going with my current insurance company. Hope this helps.

This may be a silly question, but I'd still like an answer...LOL. Is it truly necessary to let your insurance company know that you have PCOS? I was dx in 2005 and didn't really know what to do. Besides I'm not on meds right now, but about to go back on that and bcp. Is there a pro to letting them know?

Well my understanding is that once you are being treated for symptoms of PCOS or have it noted in your medical chart, then your insurance will know about it. Which is where my concern is coming from. If I am Dx, then whether or not I want my insurance to know, they will know about it. So I'm concerned about after being Dx, or treated for symptoms, will I be turned down by any/all insurance if I try to switch. Thanks for all the advice and input guys, I really appreciate it.

If you try to switch I doubt you'll be turned down by an insurance company as such (they want your money!!), but it's likely there'll be that 'stand down' period for a certain amount of time before they'll be willing to pay out for anything.
