I pay $78 a month and my employer pays the rest. It covers my 2 boys and myself. I pay a $10 copay for office visits, $25 if I go to the ER, and no copays for prescriptions.

Well this is one reason that i love Canada! Subsidised Heath Care! I don't know about other provinces but here in Alberta you are required by law to be covered under Alberta Health Care, if you can't pay for it they (government) will pay it for you. It covers trips to the drs office, er, stuff like that. I don't even think about what it costs to go to er or the drs office, they have my # there and i never see the charge, Alberta health just pays it. We (me and my dh) are also covered under a health plan he has at his work. We pay for our prescriptions but get 100% back, we also get like 80% back on dental and 50% on eyes. He also has a helath spending account at work that covers whatever else we night need that those others don't cover, up to $2000. I take Paxil, Synthroyd, Metformin every month and pay like $80, and get it all back. I have NO complaints!

My dh is also in the military and it depends on where you live how good the military care system is. You have the option of seeing a military doc or going to a civilian in most places. Everything is paid (medical, dental, vision- 1 exam per year), perscriptions are low copay. Also, referrels to any specialities are covered as well, ie RE, psychiatry, etc.. As long as your regular doctor refers you to someone, it's covered.
Oh and cost for medical and vision is nothing, dental is $20 something for the family.

i also live in canada and i don't make enough money so i pay the bear min for scripts (for all 3 of my med is only comes up to $12) i have never seen a medical bill and as long as i have my care card everything is aok go canada and universal health care!

I do not have insurance at the job I have and I take care of some of the germiest people...kids! When I started my job, the company offered ins. but it was expensive and didn't cover much. Then when I started realizing I was sick I decided to get it, but at the same time the owner of our company gambled, yes I said gambled most of the company's money away and lost control of the company. So in addition to them giving us rubber paychecks every two weeks, the company was under new management and all offers of insurance were revoked. So I continued to get sick and ended up going to a free clinic near my home for people who are low income or no ins. and there was a wonderful doctor who referred me to a teaching hospital a couple hours away from home, which sounds far, but I'd rather drive and be taken care of for the $12 they make me pay at the hospital than work my butt off for crappy private ins. I think the health care system in this country is shameful.

Cottonball, my MIL goes to the free clinic as well & gets better care than when she paid for ins. She is now able to get things done that she wouldn't have been able to do paying for ins. Yes, this country's health care system isn't worth a hoot.
my medical ins was a negotiating point on me taking this job. kind of a long story, so i won't go into it all.
but reading all of these posts, i know there are plans out there for low income. i was on one after i was too old to be on my parents' insurance and not making much money on my own. i know things vary from state to state, but i was on a program called ValuMed or ValueMed. something like that. it covered hospitalization, you know, for emergencies. i still had to pay for the occasional dr. office visit and any prescriptions. but at least i knew if it got into a car wreck or something like that, i wouldn't be bankrupt.
in my experience, dental insurance isn't worth the effort. you pay month after month (granted, it's only like $20 or 30/month) but then when you need a surgery like wisdom tooth extraction, it only covers like 40-50% of the bill. you still pay a lot out of pocket. you're better off putting your $20/month in a savings acct if you can! rather than paying for dental ins.

I have health insurance. From my DH job we only pay $43 a month and it covers pension, health insurance, and eye doctor and next year it will cover dental. And life insurance.
aw man i cant believe you guys have to pay,just too see a doctor.
that makes me sad
i live in canada too..and i just couldnt imagine wat it would be like to pay for everything.
you guys deserve free healthcare too!

I am unemployed and don't have insurance. I lost it when I got laid off. Luckily though, there is a State funded clinic with sliding scale fees. And one of the nurses told me that since I am staying with my brother and don't have my name on the title, and have no lease, etc that I can say I am doubling up and get free care (some grant). It pays for doctors visits at least, don't know about any additional tests. My bc shot is free due to another grant, but I know it doesn't pay for the sinus surgery that I need. But, at least I can go to the doctor and they have a few to choose from so I was able to find one I liked and didn't have to go back to the quack I used to go to. :-)
I have insurance through DH, but our coverage just changed and it is soo expensive to see a specialist now! I am planning on adding my insurance during open enrollment.
