I'm new to the pcos boards. Just as an intro... dh and I have had 7 pregnancies, 3 m/c, 2 stillbirths, and 2 living children. Our first stillborn son was born at 34 weeks due to a total abruption and the last was just 7 weeks ago from a cord that was too tight on his neck (not even wrapped all the way around one time). I wanted so badly to start ttc (just like after our first) but with time I know I can wait a little longer. I know from experience that as the grieving process goes on it can make it seem a little more possible to wait (I did have my 3rd section as well.) Dh and I are going to put in papers to adopt and then maybe try ttc in a little while (since we may or may not get chose via adoption for quite some time). I know ttc will be very hard because I really don't trust my body now that two of my little ones have died from different unexplained causes... I think I might be able to grow an ulcer bigger than a baby.
So now onto how this all relates to PCOS. My OB doesn't want me back on met. I used it just for a few months to ovulate and get pg with my last baby. I think he doesn't want me on it due to the fact that he worries I might get pg too soon and the fact that it isn't FDA approved for PCOS... and as a physician, you would hate to have someone lose a 3rd baby and then have them come after you for perscribing something that isn't FDA approved for that purpose.
I worry by not using the met that my body will get out of whack again. I cut out white sugar two weeks ago and am planning on cutting out white flour next week, but how much can I really accomplish. I would just hate to make it hard to ttc when I want because I know the best time for me to get pg is usually right after a pregnancy or m/c. But I also hate to get pg before I get my blood results back from the hematologist.
I think we are doing pretty well on the grief front. There is still quite a bit but there are more and more happy times. I remember it being somewhat like this with our first. It helps to know you have survived before and things felt okay to know that you can survive again.
Hi Heather...wow you've had a rouph time...i'm so sorry about your losses. SC is an amazing source of info...if i were you i'd really take lots of time to search out the threads you'd be amazed at how much info you will find...and really take advantage of the 'search' function...you might be particularly interested in reading up on the IR Diet, or the glycemic index....both ways to help control the insulin effects of pcos that metformin would do but thru diet instead...but really just read read read...pay attention to signatures and what other cysters have done...often you'll come across someone who has the same history as you and has tried things you havent heard of before...i learned alot that way. This site is constantly active...other places you might post and no one reads it 3 or 4 days...here you barely get finished and someone is there to help...you almost have to take it on like a project...but once you get going it all comes together...
hope you find the answers you're looking for but you came to the right place!!

I am so sorry for your losses. There are no words...
In terms of your question: For me personally... I have not yet attempted a pregnancy without it's use. I do know that during a recent break... I did experience weight gain, fatigue and the aweful facial hair issues. I low carbed but still couldn't shed the weight at all until I went back on the met to begin fertility treatment all over again... and now I do intend to remain on it. My body just doesn't seem to work properly without it. Some might argue though that my body still isn't functioning properly as I have had repeated miscarriages while using Met. I just don't know that I have the courage NOT to use it... I am not prepared to find out whether or not I could get the PCOS under control without Met... it will be interesting to read the responses of others.
((HEATHER)). I'm so sorry for all of your losses, and I'm glad you're waiting to TTC until you're fully ready.
It can be possible to control PCOS symptoms through diet. I'm on Sugar Busters, which means only "healthy" carbs. I also eat organic veggies/fruits and hormone/antibiotic-free meats. I stay away from weird artificial ingredients (except Splenda, because I'm a sweet addict).
This and regular exercise helped me lose 42 pounds last year. BUT, since Rivi was born, my metabolism has been very screwy, and even WITH Met, I'm barely losing anything. I'm not IR, my OB/GYN just has me on Met. There are lots of research articles on this site that prove Met's usefulness in treating PCOS. Have your doc read some of them. Barring that, I'd shop around until you find someone who WILL prescribe it.

Heather,
I'm sorry to hear about your little lost ones. What a long journey you've been on... I wish you luck with whatever you and your husband decide to do.
I'm a metformin believer. I think most of us cysters have too much insulin to function properly at all, and met is one tool to help get it down. Lifestyle is important for us, too, but of course that takes tons of effort when we've often got enough going on. I'm glad you're working on diet, but it sounds like your body needs metformin. If I were you (or me) I'd insist on staying on met all of the time. Just my opinion.
I hope that your family feels some peace soon.
(((Hugs)))
Sheri
