When I first read about PCOS earlier this year, it sounded eerily familiar - Weight loss troubles, period loss troubles, hair loss troubles. I brought it up with a nurse practitioner at my dr.'s office (awesome student health center at Emory University) and we decided to monitor symptoms closely for a while before doing the labwork and referral to a doc for a dx.
Well, 7 months, 2 periods, and a round of bloodwork later I was referred to Dr. Lisa, a fabulous internist and Women's Health program coordinator who just yesterday looked at the results and said "yep, it looks like you've got PCOS". From our discussion, it sounds like I've probably had PCOS for quite some time, possibly since high school. It's frustrating that I'm just now figuring out what's going on...but also feels good to be figuring out what's going on.
So, they didn't do ALL the tests necessary to conclude that I am IR, but Dr. Lisa said that my borderline high glucose (99 mg/dL), trouble losing weight, fatigue, and family history of diabetes all point to IR. She prescribed 1000 mg. Metformin (500 mg. 30 min. before b.fast and dinner) and said that we can move up to 1500 or 2000 if necessary. After reading about met. and some of the frustration cysters have had getting a dx and a prescription, I was thankful to have found a responsive doctor who seems to know PCOS well. She also recommended supplementing my vitamin routine (One a Day Women's and an extra B12) with a calcium supplement (2 Viactiv chews) with vitamin D a flaxseed supplement, and female rogaine for the hair loss.
I started the Metformin this morning. No side effects yet, but I suppose its probably too soon to tell how I'll respond. Anyway, I am glad to find a community of women going through the same sort of PCOS traumas. I look forward to all the information and support this site has to offer.
