Default Introduction and Question About Met

Hello - I'm new to the boards!

I was diagnosed with PCOS last October.

I have two questions that I was wondering if anyone has any experience with.

One: Has anyone had any problems with hunger, general spaciness, and/or shakiness on met?

Two: Has anyone had a glucose tolerance test result of lower than 70 (two hour blood draw form)?

I had real low sugar (60) after the test and I felt just fine. My RE said that confirmed that I was hypoglycemic.

I've tried to take Metformin a couple of times, but I can never stay on it for more than a couple days because I get the symptoms I listed in my first question, and I feel I have to eat about every two hours!

I'm a little stressed because I really want to conceive, and she has made it clear that my chances are much lower without metformin or another insulin regulating drug.

I just don't get it - I feel much better off metformin - I feel like I have blood sugar issues when I'm on it, not when I'm off it!

Eeek!

Any feedback, help, advice is much appreciated.

My name is Maggie by the way, and my husband Chris and I have been ttc for two and a half years. I am starting Clomid for the second time (first try was in '07) next cycle, and I'm very excited, but now I'm nervous to try it without metformin.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Maggie--

I started Met 2.5 weeks ago, and this is my first time with it. I am trying the extended release, and I am taking 1000/day (2 pills every night before bed). I am also noticing that I am getting really hungry and am also having periods where I get dizzy (though don't actually shake) and spacey. What my doctor has recommended is eating small meals throughout the day (4-5 times a day). I haven't totally eliminated the symptoms yet (and am still having intermittent problems with nausea), but I do find that eating and drinking regularly is helping me to feel better. I am still figuring out how to put running into the mix. If I feel too dizzy to run when I wake up first thing in the morning, I skip the run, eat breakfast, and work in a run later in the day. I find, though, that each day is a little different. I'd be interested in any ideas you have, too!

Good luck!

Hi there! I can only answer your first question, as I haven't had a glucose tolerance test.

When I first got on met in March of last year, the first week or so I was on it I had NO appetite what so ever. I wasn't sick to my stomach or anything like that, just the thought of food grossed me out. It just felt full even though I wasn't.

I was only one met for a month or so and then DH and I decided to wait another year to TTC so I got back on the pill. I just started the met again in January and I only had a day of feeling kind of gross. I also was very constipated the first 3 weeks or so I was on it. I never had the opposite problem, thank goodness, EXCEPT when I had lettuce one day. FYI - no lettuce on met.

So in general my side effects were very mild and tolerable. Now that I've been on it for almost two months, I'm pretty much back to normal.

I just started met also, and if I don't eat fairly frequent small meals, I start feeling more nauseated and tired. I think it might be hypoglycemia, since a little snack seems to make me feel a lot better. I've almost gotten up to the full dose. I also noticed that I tolerate the evening dose better (since I'm asleep for any side effects, I guess) so I've been taking the full dose at night, and just half in the morning until I get more used to it.
