I have a question how do you know if you are IR? What tests do you have to see if you are IR? How is it treated?

I had a glucose tolerance test done to see if I was diabetic and the numbers weren't quite high enough to be diabetic, but not low enough either.
Treatment: diet and exercise, Metformin (Glucophage).
