Default IR Diet-friendly yogurt?

Hey just wanted to see if any of you ladies have any good suggestions for good yogurts I can eat while on the IR Diet. I don't like the Dannon Lite & Fit; Splenda just doesn't taste very good to me. I really like the Stonyfield Farms organic yogurt but that is made with sugar and I don't think I can really have that on IR (yogurt with sugar is considered a "mixed food"-have to research that more to find out what that means). I think most of the light yogurts are made with aspartame, and I'm really trying to cut artificial sweetners out of my diet (no Diet Coke or anything like that). That's why I felt the Stonyfield was appealing-because they use real sugar but then again that's what makes them unappealing with respect to the IR Diet. Plain yogurt is ok, but I like the flavored stuff better.

Alright well enough of my rambling-hope everyone is doing well and thanks in advance for your suggestions!

From what I know you can have any food on the actual IR diet as long as its linked and balanced. Even if it has sugar then just make sure you are getting enough protein to balance the carbs. I dont blame you about the splenda and atifical sweetners. They are poison to my system and make me really ill. Hope some one else has a better answer for you.

Hi Annie

I would stick with the Stony field yogurt. I don't think that it has HFCS in it, just sugar and as long as you have some extra protein with it, I think that it would be ok. Just remember that some of the carbs that are listed on the label are the carbs from being dairy - I would compare the label of a plain (no sugar) stony field yogurt with one that has the fruit/sugar and try to figure the carbs based on that. I agree with you on wanting to stay away from the artificial sugars, but I haven't done so well with it lately.

Good luck. Any other questions about the IR diet you can always PM me.

I recently tried a Fage Greek yogurt b/c it had a lot more protein than regular yogurts. It came with a little side container of honey. It needed the honey! It was pretty tart. But I didn't use all the honey so I didn't consume as many carbs as the package read. Perhaps that's something you could eat?

I buy the Dannon plain yogurt (only milk in the ingredients - no sugar) and do whatever I want to it. (Sometimes I make homemade.)

I usually add two strawberries (sliced) to it with a tsp of Splenda.

Maybe you could just add your own fruit to it.

I only eat plain, no fat yoghurt. If it's too tart (not usually a problem for me), I will cut up a little fresh fruit and mix in. Even better, peel, seed and dice a cucumber to add or mixed it into another main dish. Yum!

I don't like the texture of yoghurt that comes with the fruit already in it and I don't eat artificial sugars.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody.

You know it's really irritating that food manufacturers have to put so much sugar in everything...

I agree. I saw a news segment the other day about how companies put Whole Wheat on the outside of products, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of plain old white flour in the products. As consumers try to eat healthier, companies are getting sneakier, lol.

Oh yeah, that or they advertise healthy and whole wheat on the box but then the second or third ingredient listed is high fructose corn syrup...

I have found potatoes listed as an ingredient in ice cream before. It's just nuts! The compaines know what makes us crave more, lol, so they load the food up with it. I was buying no sugar, oatmeal cookies from walmart, but they stopped carrying them. They dd start carrying Sweet Potatoe chips. I thought they would be like WF's chips. Nope, they had sugar and potato in them! Why can't they just deep fry swet potatoes in olive oil insted of putting all the other stuff in?

You would think that's what they would do...it would be much easier in the manufacturing process without all the other stuff added.

You know a lot of times I find that the healthy foods with hardly any additives are more expensive than those foods which have an ingredient list a mile long (with ingredient names a mile long as well!). It's completely bass-ackwards.

Wow sweet potato chips sound awesome right about now...

No kidding! I just got back from grocery shopping. For more than double the price, I got canned tuna without all the 'extras'. And I didn't pick up a couple other canned items because there were no nutritional labels on them.

I mix 1/2c. yogurt (usually greek) with cottage cheese.

Also, most natural food stores or co-ops will have yogurt that is not sweetened. It's better to avoid HFCS altogether even if it means buying yogurt with a bit of natural sugar (cane sugar, etc). HCFS is the debil!

The best yogurt I have found, which was recommended by a nutritionist is Chobani - it has 14g of Protein, 0g of fat and only 20g of carbs!
