Good to hear this--get the book, start it---you'll be amazed.
You *can choose* to have your blood sugars tested before and during your journey, unless your physician stumbles across a problem that is life threatening. What's the deal with the Atkins diet anywyay?

Favorite things:
~the way I feel following the IR WOE
~exercising
~slip ups, to remind me where I came from
~choice

Must Haves:
~measuring cups and spoons
~food journal (preferrable a colorful, fun one)
~willingness
~persistence
~patience
~flexibility

Insulin Resistance diet. Its based around eating low carbohydrate foods. Not all PCOS girls are insulin resistant, but eating low carb foods is proven to significantly help reduce the symptoms and make weightloss easier than regular eating plans.

You'll generally find that people who suffer from Diabetes use the IR and the GI diet...my dad was diabetic for 50 years before he died and he had been on a 'diabetic diet' for at least 30 years, as advised by his Endocrinologists. The blood sugars are measured regularly when you are diabetic and on that diet you cound the carbohydrate units just like on IR.

This is a brief outline of the IR diet

http://www.heartlandnaturopathic.com/irdiet.htm

GI

http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/diet/gi_diet.htm

and the diabetic diet

off the top of my head

fruit:
cherries
Trader Joe's no sugar added jam (sweetened with just a little grape juice-- I bought and packed a bunch last time I was in Boston)
all fruit smoothies (avoiding too much grape juice)

grains:
Kashi TLC crackers (the 7 grain kind... the others have more sugar)
brown rice blends (my fav: Whole Foods 6696)
oatmeal
kashi
Uncle Sam's cereal
mini Shredded Wheat squares
quinoa (this stuff is AWESOME-- easy to make and high protein)

Other:
yogurt

Oh, and Noir 70% to 90% dark chocolate. Can't live without that.

I don't completely IR or GI, but I incorporate a lot of both diets (matching carbs with proteins when I eat carbs, choosing foods that have good GI, eating more "whole" foods). Also I love the 80/20 rule where you're super good 80% of the time but don't beat yourself up when you cheat a little 20% of the time.

I really like the Breakstones cottage cheese and fruit combination bowls. They are usually $1.00 or less each and make a good snack. I believe they are completely balanced too. Another good one is the Kashi TLC chewy granola bars. REALLY YUMMY! They are almost balanced. I think I usually eat a string cheese with them.

Me too-- some of them are more balanced than others. I like the peanut butter ones best. I tend to eat them with more nuts.

SurrenderedCyster - where do you get your food journal? I've been looking for one, but can't find one that I really like or that has everything I want.

I just tried the Frozen South Beach Diet pizza by Kraft. It has a whole grain crust. It was surprisingly good. It was just over the carb limit at 35 or 36 grams but I didin't finish it all. It had 31gms of protein too.

A couple of staples: light string cheese, natural peanut butter, beef jerky.
