Ugg.. The anestesiologist (sorry if thats spelled wrong) for my doctor called tonight.. Ug. I asked about taking medications, and since glucophage is one of them, asked if I should take it with my early breakfast tomorrow (can't eat after 7) .. And I said "Im 'insulin resistant'" and he was like "yeah well you're either diabetic or youre not" ... and I just wanted to cry. I mean, I guess technically he's right, but.. whetever, maybe it was just how he said it, or I'm pissed that I sounded dumb.
... I dunno, maybe I should have this crap explained to me better by my endocrinologist.. but she has told me I'm not "totally" diabetic. And I went to a GP last week for a pap smear (my first.. yay) and she asked me about everything, and actually brought up PCOS with IR and all that stuff and it was really nice. SO I guess it was just frustrating..
Sorry, had to vent.
Beth
Be assured that just because the anesthesiologist (however you spell it!) is a dr. doesn't mean they know what they are talking about either!
Diabetes is technically when your blood sugar is too high, so if it's not you are not diabetic.
Diabetes Type I is when your body doesn't produce insulin at all.
Diabetes Type II is when your body still produces insulin, but the cell uptake of glucose is not happening so your blood sugar is constantly too high.
And Insulin Resistance is when your body overproduces insulin because the cell uptake is also weak and it needs more insulin to do the job - but it is doing the job keeping your blood sugar down for the time being. Your blood sugar levels are not in the diabetic range.
IR can lead to Type II Diabetes because the pancreas is overworked and stops producing the high levels of insulin your body is requiring to keep your blood sugar down. In fact, low blood sugar is common with IR because huge amounts of insulin stay in the system and consistently clears sugar from the blood even after you stop eating.

Yeah, when he said that to me about being diabetic (what I think I remember saying was "I take glucophage .." and he goes "yeah I know what its for" and then i said "but Im not really diabetic, Im insulin impaired" and he says "well if youre ong lucophage, its for your blood sugar and you're either diabetic or you aren't") .. SO it was like, I wanted to go "OK, theres this thing calles PCOS.." but I was so upset and didnt even wanna get into it cause I'm SURE he wouldnt have heard of it.
My doctor was so nice, but the anestesiologist wasn't genuine. I mean. He seemed nice, but not like he really wanted to be. Everything he said felt rehearsed. I was kinda pissed, but its over and I dont have to see him again. The one time he was nice was when I woke up after the surgery and puked and he said something like "yeah its better to get that out cause of the tube" or something like that... and then he was trying to give me gum but I was so out f it still I didnt want to take it ..
AH well, its over... dont have to deal with him.. I should mail some articles of IR to him,LOL

He's an anastesiology (spelling?!). He works with drugs that make people sleep and makes sure they don't die, it doesn't mean he knows anything about other kinds of medical problems. (that's why he doesn't do the surgery too!)
I mean, would you follow a cardiologists' advice for a bone disorder?
Just because they're a doctor, doesn't mean they know everything there is to know about the human body.
There are many doctors who don't believe that PCOS even exists.
I have been to plenty of DRs and "specialists", the only one who understood the IR factor was the Dr who put me on Gluc.
I have had many diferent kinds of tests this last year and most of them look at me like "whatever" That is usually from my responce of...."No, I'm not diabetic, I'm IR and there is a big diference"
They don't say too much after that.
one or two have asked for the diference and I explained it to them. Then they are like..."Oh, Ok now I understand"
So I feel more like i'm educating them than anything.
Hang in there everyone!
