IR, Metformin and the lack of help for young women with PCOS
Please can someone advise me on the IR diet? I am taking Metformin and I was wondering if there is anyone else that could give me some advise on what I should be doing as my GP is rubbish and very negative about PCOS. I was diagnosed when I was 17 but was displaying symptoms at 15 but my GP told my mother i was just being dramatic lol! When I had the ultrasound that confirmed PCOS no-one really explained anything-simply told me(a naive 17 year old then!) that I could be infertile!!! I cried all the way to the bookstore and found a book by Collette Harris which was a fantastic book, and went home and told my mum. Since then, everywhere I have worked I speak very openly about PCOS as there are so many women out there that have it but are unaware of what it is so the more women that know, the better. Im 23 now and after changing GPs more times than I care to remember, this one has let me try Metformin (after months of persuasion!) but hasn't really advised me on what I should be doing regarding the food I should be eating so anyone that can recommend anything to me...please do!
Thankyou
gracie
Gracie, you might want to check on the Diet & Exercise section of this forum. Look at some of the topics at the top of the forum that discuss diets, and scroll through several months of posts. People have success with different diets. I think South Beach, the IR Diet, and others that stress that you get enough protein and stay away from carbs that make your glucose spike (like white bread, potatoes, white rice, sugar, corn syrup) seem to work well for those of use with IR.
I believe that Collette Harris has another book about PCOS that concentrates on diet. Check your local bookstore or amazon.ca: I'm sure I've read through it before, since she has more than one book out on the topic of PCOS.

I have been on the IR diet for several years and it has been a miracle for me..slow but steady hormone shift. IWithout diet the meds weren't helping much abd adding this way of eating has been such a gift...i feel like a girl again!
Libraries usually have the book, so it might save you some $.
Hope it helps!
