Okay, I haven't posted on here in awhile. But, I've been having problems with my blood sugar. When I'm feeling like I'm low, I've checked my sugar and it was in the 70's. After meals I'm no higher than low to mid 80's. I checked it this morning after I got up and going and it was 83. I'm not sure what's going on. Is my sugar levels ok? My dr suggested before that I do that Ac-1 test or whatever but I haven't yet, mainly cuz i can't get approved for insurance and I'm afraid how much it will be. I'm IR and haven't been diagnosed with type 2 yet. I'm on 1500 mg of metformin daily. Can someone help?
Thanks!
-Lindsay
Normal blood sugar is 70 to 120, that's where they like to keep you. After meals, if could be that your not eating a lot of carbs that why your staying low...the A1C tells you how your blood sugar levels are over a three month period, you just do a fasting blood sugar test for this. If your in range of normal your A1C will be under a 6.0
After being on meds for sometime, if your A1C is over 6.0 is will adjust and come down, mine has to a 5.6. If you eat something like a hamburger, chocolate shake and a big deal of fries you sugar levels will go up, but if you eat stuff like chicken breast, whole grain rice, green veggies, this are very low glycemic foods and sugar levels won't spike. Hope this helps some...complex carbs take longer to spike than straight sugary carbs,,,like candy or juices and desserts.

Thanks for the help. I was told to go to my family dr. today. Right before I went into the office I was 83, and an hour later I was 62. He said whoever perscribed me metformin doesn't know what they're doing (my ob/gyn). And that I'm taking a higher dosage than fullblown diabetics. He said with my hypoglycemia and family history if I continue this med it will kill me. I was advised to stop taking it immediately and he's going to review my medical charts and make sure I'm okay. He said that many dr's are misusing metformin to treat pcos and that it can be controled other ways without diabetes med.
You could try controlling your PCOS with just diet if you wanted. I would really visit an Endo since you say you are IR but your blood sugar is reading a bit differently. Also, you don't need to be taking 1500 you can take just 500 (which is what I take). I would still have the A1C test run to see where you are.... Metformin is not supposed to cause hypos unless you already have diabetes or are using other medications in conjunction with it.

Thanks! I'm going to keep a check on it my dr said. I have been controlling my diet. I've watched my carbs how I'm supposed to with met. I'm going to the gym about 5 days a week. I'm completely off met now. My sugar levels haven't changed yet though. I was wondering though...if I'm IR isn't my sugar supposed to be higher or what?

Strange advice, given that metformin doesn't lower blood sugar... it works by making your body work better.
How many carbs are you eating at each meal? How long (from the START) of the meal are you checking your levels?
There are other ways to treat PCOS, but metformin isn't killing you (unless something else is going on). I would imagine that if you have been diagnosed as having IR, metformin is a fine treatment for that (and would actually be the first line of treatment).

Actually, people with IR tend to have hypoglycemic episodes. The metformin should actually help that. It could very well be that you aren't eating enough carbs, or are going too long without food. How often do you eat?

Also I wanted to add that your blood sugar doesn't have to be high to be IR. You can be IR and not have high blood sugar because your body is over producing insulin to keep those blood sugars low.... eventually that will on longer work and your pancreas will be too tired and those sugars will start to creep up. Also I agree with the above poster that Met does not cause hypo's.

Well Idk what the heck is wrong then. I keep getting conflicting advice and I have no idea what to do. I don't go too long without eating. I'm a teacher at a daycare and we go by usda. So we have the correct portions and balance that we're supposed to. We have snacks inbetween each meal, usually about every 2 1/2 hours we eat. I do watch my carbs. Like if we have lasagna and bread sticks, I don't eat the bread. And if we have potatoes and corn I'll eat either one but not both. I check my sugar when I wake up before I eat breakfast, 2 hours later then after each meal. My sugar was actually higher than I've ever had it this morning after I woke up. It was 104. I'm usually in the 70's. My dr said I only need to check it in the morning when I wake up, then at 4. However, I've been checking it the way my diabetic friend does to see how it fluctuates. I was diagnosed hypoglycemic 8 years ago, and 1 year ago I found out that I'm IR. I haven't checked my sugar before until just recently so I have no idea how my sugar was before I went on met. It's been a few days since I've taken my met so maybe my body's trying to adjust. Idk!

Be careful if you just quit the met, because if you have been hypoglycemic in the past, you may start having hypo episodes. Met does not cause hypoglycemia, that isn't how it works. It doesn't increase insulin production, it makes your body use the insulin it already made.
Who is giving you conflicting advice? What advice have you been given?

A reading of 104 in the morning puts you as being a solid pre-diabetic if not already a diabetic (a reading of 125 diagnoses you as a diabetic... but you really don't want to get there!). I would really recommend seeing an Endo since your numbers are all over the place. I was diagnosed a hypoglycemic when I was 18, I am 24 now and was just diagnosed a pre-diabetic and Met has helped me a ton. I am on Met, it has helped my reactive hypoglycemia, but I do still have "hypoglycemic" attacks but they have gotten better the longer I have been on Met. Met helps to lower your overall blood sugar and sometimes women feel a little more hypo as they get used to the lower numbers but that should even out in 4-6 months. And, I would look at your carb counting. Things like lasagne, corn, etc. are really high in carbs. You should ideally be aiming for 30grams of carbs at meals and 15grams at snack time per ADA guidelines.

Yes my levels have been all over the place. Before I ate dinner last night it was 61 and that's the lowest I've tested. I really figured I would need to go see an Endo. Since I'm off met now I can be approved for insurance, YAY! That's the main reason I haven't had my tests done yet because no one will insure me because of met.
