Post This is ironic.......

I just saw a commercial on this new pill called Seasonale (sp?)
and the purpose of this pill is to limit a woman menstural cycle to
4 times a year......huh? And it says that medical professionals say this this is "ok".

Wait, I haven't had a period for over 2 years and have taken almost every pill in exisitance (sort of ) to get a period and now
there is a pill to stop one from happening. I find this funny....

Just wanted to see if anyone else thought so too.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Default Pill for missing periods it is ironic

Hi April

Yes I heard of that pill, I have my period on and off now for the last 3 years. Its funny we get concerned when we don't get our period and now there's pills to stop it. Its very ironic!

I've always thought this was a little weird, too. I mean, I know periods can be annoying, but I can't see how this can be good for your body. I've heard that's it's been deemed "safe", but I'll be interested to see what they'll be saying 10 years from now. I could be completely wrong about this, but I was always told having a period that few times a year is not healthy. How can artifically suppressing it be ok?

Oh what tangled webs...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was on the pill for 10 years so I wouldn't get pg, and NOW I find out I never even needed it to begin with!! I was like WTF??? It is truly a cruel irony.

What I don't get is they say women with PCOS are at a higher risk for endometrial cancer because they don't shed the lining enough due to not having periods. If thats the case then what about these women purposely suppressing their periods????
I've been taking stuff to induce a period so the last 3 weeks every time I pee I'm hoping I'll have it!!!

Yes, it is very ironic....

I read somewhere once, (but don't believe everything you read)
that you only NEED to menstrate four times a year to clean out.

Ms. M, I was thinking that same thing! If we're at a higher risk because of our longer cycles, why is an artifically longer cycle okay? And I've heard that "four times a year is okay" thing, and it may very well be true. But I keep having these suspicions...IMHO, when it comes to something like this, nature is usually the best way to go. The female body was designed to shed it's uterine lining in a monthly (more or less) cycle, and I don't see how unnecessarily tweaking that can be healthy. Hmmmm....again, weird issue, and I'd be interested to see the research done on this in 10 years time.

Exclamation I was just talking about this..

with my MIL as its been 2.5 since my last AF. She said she used to have this problem when she was in her late teens and early twenties too. Anywho, the reason I thought I'd post is that it has now been determined that women who started periods at a younger age have a higher risk of endometrial and uterine cancer and therefore upon further research this is something similar to 'aging' in that the fewer lifetime periods, the lower risk of those two types of cancer and even decreased breast cancer. Of course we all know that one week we're told something is better and the next it was all wrong (i.e. drink wine, don't drink wine, drink red wine, drink a little wine, drink 1 glass per day and it'll change again).

Funny that I was talking about this just 2 hrs ago though...lol

I am sooo wishing for AF so I can start soy or clomid.

I'm too chicken of clomid because of side effects tho!

Hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had a good feast!

Historically, women used to menstrate fairly rarely, giving birth about every two years (nursing suppressed ovulation for most women for the remain time period.) So it's really just as unnatural to menstrate every month, since it's only modern contraception that enables that for most women.

Completely agree with Bethann. In the past most women would spend so long pregnant and breastfeeding, plus they wouldn't start their periods til they were at least 14 with having poor nutrition, and they would often die before the menopause! They wouldn't have nearly as many periods in a lifetime as women nowadays do.

I really don't think this is a problem. I've heard that when the first Pill was designed (by men, obviously!) they allowed for a monthly bleed because they thought women wouldl prefer it that way! There was no medical need for a bleed every MONTH. I have read that problems with not having a period only start after 4-6 months.
