Default IRS Rebate Check - Thank You Mr. Bush

A friend of ours just sent us this email:

Quote:
Something to think about............

How to use Your IRS Rebate check...

As you may have heard, each of us will be getting a tax rebate check to stimulate the economy.

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China . If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs. If we purchase a computer it will go to India . If we purchase fruits and vegetables it will go to Mexico , Honduras , and Guatemala . If we purchase a good car it will go to Japan . If we purchase useless stuff it will go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America . The only way to keep that money here at home is to spend it at yard sales, since those are the only businesses still in the US !

I think it you purchase fruits and veggies at local farmers markets the money goes to local farmers.

That is really something to think about though.

Yes, local farmers are a great resource! I'd love to buy into a CSA, but we never seem to have the $450-$500 when enrollment comes around. So, we do a lot of gardening for our own produce & hope to set up some cold-frames for us to garden during all 4 seasons.

One of my friends made a very good point that this money would be best spent on services (like dog walking, massages, maids, etc). That way, you KNOW you aren't purchasing foreign goods. Or on ebay, from US sellers.

I think the rebate checks are a bad idea to begin with. But if you're getting them, that could be a very good way to spend them.

We're using ours to purchase a woodburning stove insert for our fireplace to heat our house. The heating bills this past winter were a killer. We figure we're making an investment & in the long run reducing the $$$$$ flowing out rather than in.

If your shopping Wal-Mart, your money will further the efforts of the bean-counter's to push for cheaper products from China to keep lining Wal-Mart's Exec's pockets. Not much of your money given to them will be kept local. I have a friend who has many years of first-hand knowledge of 'what' is shipped in from 'where' when it comes to Wal-Mart.

BTW, the email was posted as 'tongue-in-cheek' reflection. The whole concept is if you really want the stimulus checks to actually stimulate OUR economy, then make sure it is spent solely in OUR economy; not trickled down into imports.

I'm not getting squat But if I was, I would try to get as much stuff as I could locally as well. I LOVE the farmer's market idea. There's also a few mom and pop places around us that I'd love to shop and spend money at. If you spend it at walmart, at least you'd be paying american's salary. lol

I know the email was meant to be a joke, but as for Mexico producing our fruits and veggies, that made me laugh. Especially after writing up my thesis on NAFTA and how the U.S. has been exploiting Mexico.

We may be spending it on out of pocket medical expenses. I guess that keeps it in the US
