I attend huddersfield new college in west yorkshire and I'm studying Double Health & Social Care, Applied Science and Psychology...
My plan was to get my A levels and go to university and do a degree in general nursing get a good several years experience and then branch off into midwifery...
But... I just can't hack it, I can hack the work, well, except Chemistry lol, but really, it's just the teachers, since i'm doing double health and social care I'm in the H&S care department every single day, and my tutor is a H&S care teacher too... but they treat me like dirt, I don't know what I've done like but lol, I can't really explain how they make me feel but it's just horrible and depressing to go to college and listen to them 'diss' me and upsets me even more since they are health and social care teachers lol
Anyway I'm ranting on so i'll cut to the chaase !
I went to see my careers officer and explained i want to drop out but i want to be a nurse, she suggested I do a diploma, I have to be 17 years and 6 months so I'll have to start in January...
I've noticed there are a few nurses around on the boards, I'm just not sure where I read it lol
Do you think my plan is wise? Drop college and go straight into a diploma?
You need to have a really good think about it. If you are sure that nursing is definetly for you then go for it. Have you had any caring experience?
Have you had a word with someone about how you are feeling, maybe at something like student services if you feel that you can't talk to your tutor.
The parent side of me says finish your course and leave your options more open. Snow White is a nurse and will probably have better advice for you
Good luck with whatever you choose x

Whats the difference in doing the courses you are currently doing compaired to the diploma?
I mean will they equal the same in a hospitals eyes?
I personally would be aiming at the diploma if you are that unhappy because eventually it will effect your work. But i would find out what else you will have to do.
Can you do the diploma at home and maybe get an apprenaship (SP) just a thought.
Think about your options then pick which one is best for you. But make sure you ask your careers adviser what else is involved.
Awww Im sorry that they are making you feel so bad. I definatley think you should talk to the someone about how you are feeling. In my opinion you should not leave, you should stay focused and don't let them through you off course (I know it's difficult). It' s your career don't allow anyone to get in the way of your goals. it won't last for ever and you will be so proud of yourself if you stick at it. also it will help you to deal with difficult people in the future. Just consider it 'character building'.
In the future when you are asked in a job interview to describe how you deal with a difficult and/or challenging situation or people that you struggled to get on with, at least you willhave this as a perfect example!
Your teachers sound like my boss- total nightmare. I am only sticking the job out to get my training done. Everyone tells me to leave but I will not allow her to interupt my goals.
chin up girl.

hello tara
im mel im a nurse for three years now, i went down the same route as you i did my health and social care it was called a GNVQ back then and hated it!!!i finshed it though. I did the diploma you can always do the degree after thats what im doing then its 18mths same if you want to be a midwife after doing your general nursing its 18mths traning. After my GNVQ i went to work in a nursing home for a few years before i started nursing to get my confidence up have you any experience?cos it helps loads i didnt go to uni until i was 22 i personally think i wouldnt have stuck it out at 18 but everybodys different. Have you thought about becoming a care assistant or better still a health care assistant in a hospital then you can get a feel of the job also they do NVQS whuch are accepted onto the nursing diploma??there are lots of options!!if you have any questions just ask away. mel xx
yeah, the health and social care is a real bummer, i got 12 out of 80 in my first submission in a unit called 'needs and provision' lol ;[ but other people got 3, so it wasn't THAT bad...
yeah, i've had a bit of experience, i've worked in the huddersfield royal infirmary, helped out a little in the carehome my great granddad is a resident at. The college is sending me to sweden in june to do some health and social care work there for three weeks, then in the summer i'm going to do some volunteer work with St Johns Ambulance, and work in my local hospice called kirkwood hospice...
i think what im gonna do is look at my AS results, because if they're crap there's no way i'm going to be able to hack year 2. And anyway, you have to be re-enrolled and they'll probably turn me down :d LOL
my friend was telling me something about a T+R job, i can't really explain what it is since i forgot, something to do with nursing and getting paid for it lol, do you know?
hey tara
no i have never heard of t+r what does it stand for??keep going because i of all people never thought id be where i was today i was always skiving class and didnt do that great at college.if somebody told me id be a nurse 5 years ago i would of lauged so hard!!x

The real problem is that you probably expected life would be much easier once you left secondary/high school, but the reality is that people do treat you as dirt. And that's part of adult life.
Don't give up the course you're on just now. Sticking to it is very important because if you quit, it'll show on your CV for ever and you'll be labelled a quitter. Much better to stick at it even if you have resits -- that will show determination which is much more important than ability.
Life is full of things one doesn't like. We all have to jump hurdles to get what we want. Show those horrible people that you're not a quitter and they'll respect you, even if they may not be nice to you.
