I have to go of BCP because my blood pressure has been creeping up...so know we are debating between the big "V" for DH or an IUD for me. Does anyone have any insight on either?
I'm pretty sure we are done having kids, Thank the Lord I have one of each, and that is plenty. So TTC in the future is not an issue.
TIA, Ladies.

I had the copper IUD for almost 8 years. I loved it for the most part, although I was more prone to bacterial vaginosis & yeast. It's nonhormonal so it doesn't interfere with drugs, ovulation, etc. Yeah, I see you're on doxy...it won't mess with that like ol' bcp. You can keep it for up to 10 years.
IMO I wouldn't get the Mirena b/c it's got the synthetic progestin and that has been known to worsen IR and cause irregular bleeding. Like depo except not as bad. It also gets replaced a lot more often & has the same issues with BF & yeast anyway.
There's another IUD with real progesterone, the Progestasert? that gets replaced yearly. It releases the real deal, not known to worsen IR & can help us balance our PCOS-bombing estrogen we usually produce. But some people don't like progesterone (try out NPC or something a few weeks & see) and once a year might become expensive.

Been a long time since I've been on this site. I have 2 girls 8 & alomost 3. I have been trying different BCP's since I stopped breastfeeding my youngest at 5mos. Nothing is working. I had the Mirena put in last Oct. Bleeding on and off ever since. I am going tomorrow to have it removed and taking my chances. I can't be on the pill even low dose as it drives my blood pressure up. Even on Gluc XR to reduce hormones is still not working. My OBGYN said that the PCOS is just too much to have the IUD control the hormones in my body. Very strange as I am a thin cyster. (well, for the most part that is, 20lbs over weight)

Welcome Maci, 10/10/2003 My beautiful baby girl !!!!
I had a copper iud and had no problems what so ever. I chose that because i am no good remebering to take, pills and i didn't want any accidents and dh REFUSED to talk about the V- luckily he did as were are trying again. The copper iud has no hormones unlike the mirena and it is good for upto 10 years (mirena 5 yrs-some 3) I would recomend the iud

I think you meant has no hormones UNLIKE the Mirena? Mirena has the synthetic progestin and Progestasert has the real progesterone. Copper has none. Copper gets replaced once every 8-10, Mirena every 3? And Progestasert yearly.
mainemom, yeah, the Mirena's progestin can cause irregular bleeding, and at any rate progestin by itself does not usually stop ovulation (the progestin-only minipill only stops O about 40% of the time, the other ways it prevents pg is changing mucous, changing motility of tubes, changing implantation factors). The progestin can also worsen IR, which is the root of most of our PCOS ills (except the new drespinone progestin in the Yasmin & YAZ combo pills). The natural progesterone doesn't do that, but having to change an IUD every year might suck.
I've got to choose something after Dec...can't figure out whether to try luck with a diaphragm or get another IUD...only thing about them is I got female infections more often, or so I thought--may have been just issues of not treating my PCOS right at the time. Other than that, I loved the IUD. It never made my AF that more painful, and never made it heavier either. I noticed no difference in AF once I had it removed for a biopsy; that's another thing, if you have to have a uterine biopsy done any IUD "needs" to be removed to limit infection risk. If you have to have annual biopsies or something (big C) you might consider another type of birth control, or go with that Progestasert.
