Ok, I have a question for you all. I've been reading about my faith (Catholic) and all the while I'm reading about the history of my faith, I've been wondering about the history of the Jewish faith through the ages.
So, having said that, are there any good books that I could read about it? I don't want to just start searching on Barnes and Noble because I want something that is legit with the Jewish faith. I hope that I'm making sense. I know how many horrible books there are about the Catholic faith and I'd really like to find a GOOD book about Jewish history.
Thanks in advance!

Paul Johnson's "A History of the Jews" is one of the best.
For a very good book (difficult read, though, emotionally) on the history of antisemitism, I recommend the newest edition version of "Anguish of the Jews."
Kay Arthur's "Israel, My Beloved" is interesting, more of a historical novel, but it goes through from biblical times up through today and into the future; Kay is a Christian, btw.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm not Jewish, but I have a bachelors degree in Jewish Studies.
This sounds absolutely ridiculous but if I did believe in a god and had the choice of a religion to be born into, I'd have liked to have been Jewish!
My mum has always said, since I was a little girl, that I have always reminded her of her old Jewish boss lady who had a really sharp sense of humour and a tongue to match! She says I was born in the wrong country and time!

I'm VERY interested in learning more about the Jewish faith. You can learn so much from reading the Old Testament in the bible, but there's so much missing! I've fortunate to know a LOVELY Jewish woman (orthodox) who's been explaining so much to me, but there's so much more I'd love to know. After all, it's the Jewish folks who helped to start my religion.
While I'm reading about the history of my Church, I can't help but wonder what was going on with the Jews while all this is going on. And, I'm well aware that there is a lot of bad things that have been going on (there's a lot of nasty stuff that happened to the Catholics throughout history as well, but no where NEAR what the Jews have faced).
I just find history and religion SO fascinating!
And, tikvah, I will probably take you up on your offer and I will probably pick your brain constantly when I get a chance to read those books!
yeah me too Celtic, although I don't believe in it myself, I am very interested in the traditions and how they started/are carried through. I find it fascinating.
I come from a long line of roman catholics, and am married onto one too...I like the traditions and am very interested in them. but I don't go any further than that.
I remember watching a programme following a jewish family, and at one of their gatherings they asked one of the men at a table about his beliefs, he replied that he was Jewish by birth, but actually an athiest, however, he loved the traditions and the community spirit so he still attended the gatherings and followed the traditions like he always had done. I loved that story

There is a Hebrew word Bible out you might be interested in. It is the OT and NT, but uses Hebrew tradition. I would love a copy, but haven't bought one yet.
Have you read Echoes of His Prescense? It has different chapters on Jewish customs in the first century. It covers weddings, engagements, home life, etc.
Shalom All!
I have only just noticed this post, so here are my suggestions.
The Rabbi Joseph Telushkin has published an interesting book called 'Jewish Literacy: The Most Important Things to Know About the Jewish Religion, Its People and Its History.'
Essential Judaism: A Complete Guide to Beliefs, Customs & Rituals by George Robinson - a good overview.
You could try an amazon.com search too - use words like hasidic, frum, orthodox, for some interesting results.
I would also recommend wikipedia.com - just because it provides a great overview and has many links to keep following - lots of fun! i would start with 'lubavitch' and go from there.
Thank you so very much for your recommendations!!! There is SO much history involved with the Jewish religion (as well as with my own faith--it's overwhelming!) and I can't help but think about the Jewish people as I'm sitting here reading a book about the history of the Catholic Church, since, it's with the Jewish faith that it all began.
There are blurbs here and there about happenings with the Jewish folks through the ages (and let me say this...anti-Semitism has been around for QUITE a while and the Jews were blamed for a wide range of issues throughout the years beginning very early on) but not enough to parallel what was going on with the Church.
Thanks so much for leading me in the right direction!

Ironically, I'm Jewish and REALLY interested in Ireland-ism (I know, not a religion, but I LOVE Ireland) are you from there? are just have ancestry?
I was on one of my usual gossip sites, when I came across a site dedicated to Jewish people in the media, it was fab actually....will google and post it....

No, I'm not from Ireland and I've never had the opportunity to go either. I would LOVE to go.
There's Irish blood on both sides of my family. I'm about 50/50 Irish & German but if you took one look at me, the Irish would jump right out at you.
This is a really nice thread!
I just thought I'd add, when I was younger I remember seeing a documentary on tv about art history and they filmed inside some beautiful churches. I remember seeing a Catholic priest wave an incense stick around and there were heaps of candles and a little baby was baptised in a basin and I thought it looked so beautiful and romantic! I guess whatever is unfamiliar is interesting - I'm sure curious about a lot of stuff involved in other faiths, but in many ways, it's not the 'thing' to explore. Perhaps, like many of you others, I should be less scared and have a look in anyway!
Thanks for all the holiday well wishes, and I hope everyone has a great day on Monday! Merry Christmas
Ireland is beautiful but it's not all like you'd imagine, from seeing in the films.
I've been to Donegal, and Dublin. Donegal is nice, big and has some lovely small towns but its not quite 'The Quiet Man'
Dublin is the most cosmopolitan city I've ever been in. Its got loads of history but in the centre of Dublin, you're hard pushed to find an Irish accent, and after a wild saturday night on the bevvy (temple bar area is full of pubs and its open all night, we had a ball for 3 nights in a row!), my friend wanted to attend mass. We went everywhere to find a chapel and even asked the people we lodged with, but they weren't locals and didn't know where the local chapel was!! Eventually we asked a nun, and her reply was 'ocht didn't ye know? there are no catholics left in Dublin now!' LOL
Anyway, she was joking and told us that the catholic cathedral was in the next street off O'Connell st. We went to mass with her and I spent the whole time admiring the cathedral - it was very grand and lovely to look at.
EDIT: on the flight home, we met the Nun again, she was going to Glasgow to visit her brother. She asked if I was buying any drink, and I wasn't so she asked if I could use my boarding pass to take an extra bottle of whiskey over with me...for her brother, the priest That cracked me up, and I did of course. She very kindly bought me some shots of Baileys on the flight and I was half smashed by the time I got home. Great stuff!
