I haven't been on the boards in a very long time, but have felt the need lately. So here I am.
In early December my DH had a SA and it was bad news. With some problems in his early childhood we knew it was possible that he was sterile but the SA confirmed it. We to say the least were devastated.
But we have picked ourselves up and moved forward with adoption. We have filled out the first packet of info and have our classes schedule for late January. We are adopting through DCFS. We are very excited and pray that by the end of 2004 we will be parents. I am sure as the process continues I will have more questions, concerns or comments. I want to Thank you all now for the support I know you will give.
I'm sorry about the bad news you received, however I am glad to see you going on the adoption road. As an adoptive parent of a beautiful DD, I know this was the way it was meant to be with my family. She looks just like my DH (unfortunately acts like him too ), and is a perfect match for us. Best of luck to you .

Stacy:
So glad to have you join us here on the adoption option. It sounds as if you and your dh are well on your way to becoming parents before the end of 2004. Best wishes with your classes... keep us posted on your progress!!

Did you know you had endo or fibroids. I am scheduled for a lap and I am very nervous. I had a HSG done to see if my tubes were clear and my re told me that I may have a small fibroid or it can be just a shaddow.
I'm sorry for the bad news, but welcome to the adoption board. I hope things go smoothly for you and that your adoption journey is short. All the ladies here were a tremendous help to me and answered my questions....you've come to the right place for support and help!

Thanks everybody. We are excited and scared all at the same time. After the first packet of info which will be done this week we found out we have more to do. I have been working my tail off trying to get the house ready for our first home visit which isn't scheduled yet but she said after the first packet is done.
Our caseworker has only been involved with foster care and ours will be the first adoption. Do you guys think this is good or bad?
Calantha- I do remember you, we have moved from Chicago back home to S Indiana. So much happened at the beginning of last year we felt the need to be around our family. Congrats on your adoption, I see things look to be going well for you.
Can you guys tell me what that first home visit is like? I think that is what scares me the most.
My email is stacy@stacron.com if you have more info than can be shared here or if you just want to talk or share.
I'm glad to hear you'r back home, I remember how much you missed it.
For us, we only had 1 home visit. Our other visit was done in the social worker's office. Our home visit consisted of just a simple tour of the house.
She checked to be sure we had a room for the baby, the room had to have a window and either a closet or a dresser. The minimum size requirement here was I think 40 square feet per child, which isn't much and almost any room will do for that!
She also checked to make she we had properly installed, and fully functioning, smoke detectors. We also had fire extinguishers installed cause we were paranoid, but she said those weren't required!
She checked the temp of our hot water. This seemed really silly to me since we don't have any children yet, but the water had to be no hotter than 110 degrees at it's very hottest. Our water heater sucks, so we turned it down to 110 and came out with a reading of 90 degrees!
She checked to make sure that cleaning supplies and medicines/toxins were kept out of reach of a child. We accomplished this by putting all cleaning supplies in a closet with a childproofed doorknob and all medicines on the highest shelf in the house.
Hope that helps!

Patricia: I knew that I had at least one or two fibroids before the lap, but they were suprised at how large they had become and the fact that many more had grown. I was totally surprised to find out about the endo... but they were able to clean it up during the lap. Don't worry too much... I am sure all will be fine with your lap. Good luck!!!
Stacy: The social worker came to our house 2x and we went to her office 2x. The first visit to our house she never left our living room. The second visit she did a quick walk through and commented on how wonderful everything looked and left. We waaaaay overprepared... but it is better to be safe than sorry. Like Brandy, we had fire extinguishers in the kitchen and the laundry room, changed the batteries on all 3 smoke detectors, and made everything look clean but comfortable. Good luck with the home study... I am sure you will come out with flying colors.

I worked myself into a frenzy prior to our first homestudy! It wasn't worth it for me to be wrapped that tightly over it! Don't beat yourself up about it. I certainly wouldn't spend hours cleaning out closets or things like that--I really doubt they are going to check that closely. They just want to make sure you have a house that is safe for children and able to accomodate children. Our homestudy consisted of two seperate visits to our house. During the first visit, our SW wanted to see our house and back yard, just to make sure we had room for a child. She didn't go around with a white glove. On the second visit, we never left the kitchen. Now that Luke has been placed with us, she will be out to visit us at least twice before the adoption is finalized, maybe more depending on how long it takes us to get a court date. If the house is cluttered this time around, I'm not going to worry at all...heck, I've got a newborn to take care of now. I ain't got time to clean!
The paperwork's something else, huh? I was so intimidated by the sheer amount of paperwork we had to do....hang in there. It will all be worth it, I promise, when your little one is in your arms.
