Lately, I've been have some back pains and also I think I may have a slight touch of carpal tunnel syndrome. As far as the carpal tunnel I think that may because from typing and how I grip the steering wheel while driving. Anyway, I read some interesting today on the NINDS website:
Carpal tunnel syndrome is often the result of a combination of factors that increase pressure on the median nerve and tendons in the carpal tunnel, rather than a problem with the nerve itself. Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply smaller in some people than in others. Other contributing factors include trauma or injury to the wrist that cause swelling, such as sprain or fracture; overactivity of the pituitary gland; hypothyroidism; rheumatoid arthritis; mechanical problems in the wrist joint; work stress; repeated use of vibrating hand tools; fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause; or the development of a cyst or tumor in the canal. In some cases no cause can be identified.
There is little clinical data to prove whether repetitive and forceful movements of the hand and wrist during work or leisure activities can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Repeated motions performed in the course of normal work or other daily activities can result in repetitive motion disorders such as bursitis and tendonitis. Writer's cramp - a condition in which a lack of fine motor skill coordination and ache and pressure in the fingers, wrist, or forearm is brought on by repetitive activity - is not a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Who is at risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome?
Women are three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome, perhaps because the carpal tunnel itself may be smaller in women than in men. The dominant hand is usually affected first and produces the most severe pain. Persons with diabetes or other metabolic disorders that directly affect the body's nerves and make them more susceptible to compression are also at high risk. Carpal tunnel syndrome usually occurs only in adults.
Mine is shoulder, joint, pressure point, and well, sometimes just all over pain. That's interesting though that the metabolic disorders may have something to do with it!

I had a weird thing happen to me a couple of years ago. Out of nowhere, my hips started hurting severely to the point where I couldn't walk. Then, the next day, my shoulder muscles would be rock-hard and tense and I wouldn't be able to relax them. This went on for months. Every day, it was a new pain in a different area. For example, one time it was my index finger on my left hand. It was so stiff I couldn't bend it. I went to a few different doctors and they took x-rays and ran bloodwork and couldn't find anything wrong. At first they thought I had rheumatoid arthritis, but I didn't show any inflamation in my bloodwork. It was a really strange and painful experience. Then, I had to have surgery to have my wisdom teeth removed. After the teeth were gone, I didn't have the pain anymore. I never did figure out what caused it or why. Maybe it was related to my teeth??

My joints started hurting around puberty. It started with my knees. Then was my ankles. Then I moved to another part of the country and it changed to my arms and shoulders. No surgery has helped. I'm currently doing pressure point therapy twice a week and taking gabapentin. It helps me survive the pain, but it never goes away. My mother has it too and she also has hypoglycemia and hypothyroid. As does my uncle. I believe hormones affect more than just our ovaries. Medical science is still in it's infancy...but I'm hoping for some breakthroughs over the next 20 years. I'd like to know what's the cause of the pain before I die.

Do you think maybe it's Fibromyalgia? (SP?) I wondered when I was having my migrating pains if that was what the problem was. But then again, it disappeared after I had my wisdom teeth removed. Weirdness.

I had one wisdom tooth that was in pulled out, and I still have the pain, very similar to Bianca. Can't be wisdom teeth for me at least. :\ STILL waiting on the Dr. to hook me up with the fibromyalgia specialist referral!

When I was a kid, they called it growing pains. When I got older they said it was my weight. I get pains in my hands, knees, sholders and such. The docs have never taken me seriously.

Do you think its because of pcos as well? I'm really curious about this. I remembered when I was in my teens and my arms and wrist ached and swelled up on me. The doctors were perplexed b/c I didnt fall or anything and my arm was swollen for know reason.
I've never had the swelling. Both my parents suffered with joint pain early on. I think it might be linked to PCOS, but if it's not I believe it is genetic and I got it from my parents.
Very interesting, thank you for posting that. I actually have an appointment with the Orthopedic tomorrow due to problems... my shoulder goes numb/falls asleep several times a day for the past 6 months, and now it causes my hand to go numb which wakes me up about every hour, and now I have pain in my hand and arm. I have had joint pain/aches and pains for a couple of years, but this has gotten worse. I also have orthotics to help with my foot/ankle pain... and in the mornings I can barely walk. My feet also fall asleep many times each day... I always say I'm way too young to be going through this, but now maybe it makes sense. I've had doctors "suggest" fibromyalgia, weight issues, circulation problems, etc. I'm glad I'm not alone, I swear I feel like I'm falling apart on most days
I've had joint and back pains since I was in my twenties I'm 44 now. I was really pretty fit until I turned 40.
In my mid 30s I had arthritis in my neck so badly that the doctor said I had the neck of an 70 or 80 year old with really bad arthritis! At that point I could not afford to have all the tests they wanted me to go through. Luckily that went away after several months of torture (I actually couldn't get out of bed without assistance) my neck is fine now, well it makes some funny sounds on occasion but I can move around.
When I was 40 a doctor said I had a deformity in my sacroiliac joint, that problem has plagued me since I had an injury in my 20s. Last episode of that I was laid up in bed for almost two months.
I also had problems with carpal tunnel wearing a bracer really helped that.
Not sure if this is related but I also have several bone spurs, one in my left foot punctured a tendon last year when I hopped off a two foot tall wall while on vacation so I was out of commission for several months from that and I still feel pain there. It feels like I stepped on a nail quite often, on good days it feels like I have a tack in the bottom of my foot.
Sometimes I get scared to do anything physical, I used to be so active and fearless!
