Default Juicer recommendations

I am going to buy a juicer to juice fruits and veggies and I'm looking for some recommendations. For those of you that juice, what brand/model do you recommend? I went to Costco and they had one for about $90, but it was very bulky. I haven't really looked at any others.

In my searching, I have discovered that most juicers are just juice extractors, and are not as good as liquifying WHOLE fruits and veggies. I am currently making green smoothies with my old blender, but I am looking for a better machine that will liquify the fruits and veggies better. Here is one that I am considering:

Quote:
K-Tec Champ HP-3 Outperforms the Best Juicers

Juicing can be a great way to increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Beware, however, most products that are advertised as juicers. The majority of these appliances are simply juice extractors. They extract the water and sugar from the fruit, but leave behind most of the beneficial nutrients. Any juicer that includes a "pulp basket" removes and discards the food's pulp, peel, and seeds. What you're left with is juice that's packed with Calories, but nearly devoid of fiber, and may contain less than half of the original food's vitamins and minerals. Fiber is especially important because it slows your digestion of the food, stabilizes your body's glycemic response, and provides an extended feeling of fullness. With less fiber in your juice, your body absorbs it faster, leading to a more rapid increase in your blood sugar level, which is generally accompanied by accelerated body fat storage and heightened levels of hunger. So by drinking extracted juice, you not only miss out on many nutrients, but you also jeopardize the success of your diet.
The solution is not to give up juicing, but simply to use a better appliance to produce the juice. K-Tec's Champ HP-3 has the ability to completely pulverize foods, and produce a "Total Juice" that contains all the fiber and nutrients of the original fruits and vegetables. In fact, the nutritional value of many foods may even be improved by processing with the HP-3. Studies by the Health Research and Studies Center in Los Altos, California have shown that high-power blending creates enough force to rupture the tough cell walls of plants, which improves the bioavailability of certain phytonutrients such as lycopene.

Yes, they are WAY pricey $399, but my friend has one, and swears by it. You can get a slightly used one for $279 here: http://www.blenders.net/catalog/index.html

I haven't decided if I really want to invest in one of these pricey ones, or if a higher end, regular blender would be good enough.

But I have decided to get rid of my juice extractor, and just stick to making juice smoothies.

La chica rubia,
Interesting research. I'm wondering exactly HOW much of a vitamin and nutrition loss you get with extracting juice. I will definitely look into that. What do you put into your green smoothie?

I am going to have to do some more research to find out exactly how much of the nutrients are lost when you throw out the pulp, I would estimate from 1/4 to 1/2.

For my smoothies:
So far, for the greens, I have just been using kale; it adds very little flavor to the fruit smoothies, so it is hardly noticable. I also add a carrot, and sometimes 1/2 or 1/4 of a beat. After I add the beat, it is no longer green, LOL, purple smoothie. I also add banana, and apples, for flavor, and then just what ever fruit I want to try. If I add watermelon, I don't have to add to much water to get it going on the blender. Cantelope is also pretty juicy, and oranges.
I really liked it with mango, but I haven't been finding too many fresh mangos that look good to me.
The last one I tried kiwi, and strawberry, with kale, orange, and banana, but I must have added too much kiwi, it was pretty tart. I had to add a couple more apples, and a few more bananas to make it taste better.

It has been really fun experimenting with different flavors, and combinations. I try to get a variety of colors.

Some people have used spinach in place of the kale, but I haven't been brave enough to try it yet.

My friend told me that she does parsley with oranges, since the parsley is rich in iron, and the vit c and/or acid of the oranges helps release the iron, and helps with iron absorption.

Summer is coming, and there is going to be a whole bunch of different fruit/berry and veggie combinations to try. I can hardly wait to try more combos with mango.

I haven't tried any veggie combos, like what is in v-8, but that is something I am going to look into.
