Hi. I was just diagnosed with PCOS and am still waiting on the test results for Insulin Resistance (although I have all the symptoms). I've tried my whole life to lose weight, and I'm frustrated beyond belief, as many people are. I'm looking into this IR diet/glycemic index. Does anybody know anything about it? Is it effective?? Doctor put me on Spiraloctone and Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. I'm reading a lot about Metformin? Does this help to lose weight by controlling insulin???
If anybody is out there just to talk to me, it would help ease the worries. I know I have this for life..I just have to find out how to manage this now.
Hi and welcome to Soul Cysters. I've recently started the IR diet and will be starting Met again soon. By controling your insulin you should hopefully shed some pounds. Diet and exercise in combo with the medication speeds up the process.
My best advice to ease the worries is to educate yourself on PCOS. Knowing what I have and how to deal with it has helped when I feel overwhelmed at times.
I am feeling the same way. It gave me some satisfaction in a way to know that I do have something that is affecting my body. All this time, I thought I was going crazy with diets, etc. You said that you were just starting the IR diet and going back on Metformin. What diet did you do before? And why did you go off of Metformin?? Thanks for responding!
I was on Glucophage/Metformin in 2001. I took the medication for 9 months when I decided to take myself off it. The reasons being denial that I really was sick, stubborness that I didn't want to take a diabetic medication the rest of my life, and a feeling that a lifestyle change would be sufficient enough to take of my issues with insulin resistance. I was wrong and I'm making a fresh start.
The diet that I previously followed was the Zone. It is similar to the IR diet in that it balances protein, carbs and fats. My doctor had recommended this diet when I was diagnosed.
What tests are they running for testing for IR? Was it just fasting insulin or did they also do a 2 hour GTT?
I got some results today! They were good in fact. I had a fasting glucose test to see if I was diabetic or pre-diabetic and the number was 88..which was down from it being at 93 in 1999. So that was good. I am scheduled for more tests on Friday. Doc diagnosed me w/ insulin resistance because of the "acanthosis nigricans" (darkening of skin around neck). He said that it is the #1 symptom of IR. I'm dealing ok with it...My biggest struggle is to try to find what to eat so I can lose weight. I'm really frustrated about that part about it. Everything I eat I think..."Is it ok to eat this...or will it affect how my insulin is"...probably a little crazy...but we'll see. I'm for structure....so I could easily have somebody say...ok you can eat this this and this...and I'd be all set...I need boundaries....no scribbling outside the lines kind of gal...
Well thanks again for all the support..I really appreciate these message boards...Happy Valentine's Day...and I do have to say...I'm a teacher and I got a TON of chocolate from my kids today..and I didn't have ONE bite....very proud of myself...and I even got rid of it..(gave it to my brother)...so out of sight..out of mind!!..
Hi Jen,
I'm glad you got your diagnosis and are ready to tackle the situation. Will your doctor also run a 2 hour GTT for additional information? Will you also be taking Met?
Congrats on having the strength to avoid the chocolate. I wasn't as successful yesterday. I did however only eat a small amount.
Hi! I was just diagnosed last Thursday after struggling with infertility for a little over a year. It is a relief to know what's finally wrong and to know it is treatable, but the lifestyle changes stink! The no sugar thing is killing me! I found a book yesterday that was really helpful. It is The New Glucose Revolution for Living with PCOS. I think that is the title. It is part of the Glucose Revolution series.

I have to Glucose Revolution book...trying to familiarize myself with it. That is my biggest battle right now, is trying to figure out what I should eat and what I shouldn't eat. I have another appointment with my doc on Friday. Were you put on any meds?? I think you will find that this message board is helpful...you are definitely not alone!
I was just told I have PCOS a little over three weeks ago. BUT the OBGYN I saw doesn't want to help, sooo I'm off to my reg. DR for some insulin tests on monday. But I just wanted to introduce my self, My name is Carol and I'm 23 yrs old from Philadelphia, PA.
I havnt had any problems with weight, but I was wondering why your GYN put you on Ortho Tri Lo, as its a triphasic birth control. My doc told me that it was the changing levels of hormones that can actually exacerbate PCOS.
Congrats on not eating the chocolate!

Very interesting. I read up about that on the net after you posted that last message...seems to be very true. I will look into it. I saw my primary care doc today and he put me on 500mg Metformin 2x daily. Have you ever been on this???
Im only 18, and not insulin resistant, and also not ttc, I dont think there would be much point in me taking Metformin. I was wondering tho, can you be on the BC and also take Met at the same time? Feel free to IM me, Slugfet0219 on AIM.

Sorry for the late response. Just been very busy. Birth control to regulate periods, and metformin to regulate insulin. I have been on Metformin for 1 week today. I haven't weighed myself....but I can feel the difference already. I don't know if I have lost...but it causes your appetite..to just disappear. I eat something very small...and my stomach tells me I am full shortly after...so I'm thinking that is a good thing. I have an appointment with a nutritionist on Monday, and an endocrinologist on Tuesday. We'll see what happens...good luck to you!
