Default Just diagnosed

I had bloodwork done this past Monday to have my thyroid check. Got a call back confirming hypothyroid. I had actually started a diet the Saturday before. Jump on the scales this morning to check to see how much I had lost. I wasn't expecting to see very much, perhaps a pound or two, but the needle hadn't moved any. I haven't lost one single stinkin' pound. And I've changed my eating habits and cut the bad stuff out completely. A 180 degree turnaround and nothing. I'm so frustrated. Could hypothyroid be why I'm not losing? I haven't started my medicine yet, and I'm wondering if it will make a difference.

Hi Mandygirl,

Yes, those who are hypothyroid have a very difficult time losing weight.

Did your doc run a free T4 and free T3 test, or just the usual total t4 and TSH? Most docs will only do the latter, then prescribe a T4 med (such as synthroid). Problem is, there are some who don't convert T4 to T3 well or at all, so there are many who also need a T3 med (such as Cytomel), or they do best on natural thyroid hormone (such as Armour). T3 is the metabolism hormone, and if yours is low and you are a poor converter, then all the T4 hormone in the world won't get your metabolism going.

It can take a while to get your levels adjusted, so don't expect instant miracles, but once you are optimized on the right dosage of meds (which need to be checked and adjusted every couple of months at first) you will probably find it much easier to lose weight. Be aware that many people experience water weight retention when first starting Synthroid (or its generic equivalent).

Research has shown that hypothyroid patients do well on a lower carb diet; however, not very low carb (less than about 40 net grams) or very low calorie. Stay away from soy, and take your thyroid meds at least two hours apart from calcium, iron, or fiber supplements (including high fiber foods).

I suggest you ask your doc what tests were run, and request a copy of the actual lab report. You will want that later to compare your results as you progress through treatment. Also, I highly suggest you click on this link to learn a ton of info about thyroid problems:
