So, last year, I was watching a show on the Discovery Health Channel and a girl was talking about her "medical mystery." She listed all of her symptoms (i.e. facial hair, missed periods, weight gain, etc.) and come to find out,, she was diagnosed with PCOS. I was in awe because they were the same symptoms I have had for years! I immediately went to see an endocrinologist and he tried to tell me that PCOS wasn't a diagnosis and it wasn't what I had. He took all my blood, told me I was insulin resistant, hypothyroidism, had abnormal prolactin levels, and was fat (He really did call me fat to my face!). He then gave me a bunch of pills and told me to come back every six weeks. I did this for two years without any results! Finally, I got fed up with my 70 pound weight gain, acne, and sleeping all the time, that I went back to my general practioner for help. She looked at my records, did her own tests, and diagnosed me with PCOS. Man, I was relieved! But now, after researching on the internet for hours, I'm so overwhelmed.
I'm on Met 500mg once a day. Now, I realize that dosage might change and I've only been on it for a day. I just have some questions:
1.) I've read all of the comments and research on cinammon, but should I try that, too?
2.) Right now I have no diet or excerise plan (I find it hard when all I want is a snicker's candy bar and tacos-that's what I'm craving right now!). Is there a good diet plan to go on where I don't have to give up so much? For example, I don't like atkins becase if a diet tells me I can't have bread, I will only think about wanting bread!
3.) Has anybody else had issues with prolactin levels? What was their treatment for that?
4.) I'm so sleepy to the point that I can sleep 12 hours a night and still want a nap during the day. Has anybdy successfully overcome this?
Sorry for all of the questions. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
1. If I were you, I'd wait a little while to see if the Met helps with your symptoms to your satisfaction. But that's just me, I wouldn't want to add too much too soon, it can get overwhelming.
2. If you're insulin resistant, there's actually a book called "The Insulin Resistant Diet" that might help. I'm borderline IR and I've noticed a bit of a difference here and there, maybe not necessarily with weight but feeling better when I eat. It seems like most cysters who go through a diet change find good luck with low-carb, glycemic index, etc.
3. Not sure about the prolactin.
4. All I can say is that I sympathise with the sleepiness! I take B-12 and sometimes that helps my energy level slightly. Also I find I'm more likely to get up in the morning and not be too tired right away if I get up earlier than usual.
Other than that, welcome to SC!

First of all welcome to SC!!!
1, Like a pp said I would wait and see how the Met works for you and if that dosage doesnt work they may up your dosage later on.
2. I cant help much with the diet plan either I am a thin cyster and have never had much of a problem with weight gain but I do know that a lot of cysters have lost weight when they started met. I have also read that a low carb diet seems to help a lot of people.
3. I havent overcame the being tired thing yet either, right now my RE has me on a prenatal vit which seems to have helped a bit but I am still pretty tired so maybe try a daily vit or ask your dr for suggestion. Also I know a lot of cysters have thyroid issues which can make you tired if you havent had that tested you may want to. Good Luck!!
