Hi, my name is Jennifer and after a year of no one (doctors) being
able to figure out whats wrong with me. I have been labeled as PCOS
by process of elimination.I have been reading up on PCOS and I don't
think this doctor is doing the right thing for me.
I read in order to be diagnosed you have to have 2 out of these 3
things.
Absent periods
High androgen levels
U/S of polycystic overies
I only have the absent periods (as of last June) I can only get a
cycle on provera which has been given to me twice last year.
Here are some of my symptoms...
-Absent periods
-Hair growth
-hair thining
-Acne(I never had an acne prob until last year)
-fat in the tummy
-Restless Limb Syndrome, Sleeping problems
-Shaking, heartburn, uncontrollable hunger &/or mood swings before or
after a meal
-Hyperinsulinemia (+ insulin levels), Insulin Resistance, Diabetes
-Depression
This doctor gave me provera to take for 5 days then some BC pills. He
gave me Ortho Tricyclin Lo.As well as an anti-depressent Lexapro. But I just read that ortho tricyclen lo is a Triphasic pill and willl make PCOS worse.
Do any of you have any advice on what I should ask my doctor and
proper treatment. Thanks so much!

I had a lot of symptoms like yours. My Dr (who I love) isn't a fan of BCP because it doesn't get at the root cause of PCOS. She describes PCOS as a metabollic condition that affects hormones. Instead of BCP, she suggested I adjust my diet to include more protein and less simple carbs.
Honestly, I didn't believe this system would work. But within a month I could feel the difference (no more uncontrollable hunger, nausea, mood swings) and after 6 months my cycle was regular for the first time in my life. Since you're IR, you might want to look into the IR diet. It could help and it doesn't cost anything to try.
Whatever you decide to do, you need to make sure you trust your Dr. If you're not satisfied with the treatment options s/he has given you, then check around your area to see if there's another Dr that has experience with PCOS. It makes all the difference in the world to have a Dr that you trust and you feel is working with you!
Good Luck!

Yeah the problem is we are miltary so we don't have a lot of leway as far as picking doctors...I am already on my 4th one. Ok So my Dh is coming home from Iraq in 2 weeks for 2 weeks r&r (then he goes back). So if I take the provera for 5 days then 5 day break then the BCP atleast this one pack...I should get af right before he gets here right? (I've taken provera twice before 1 pill a day for ten days and af always startes day 9. because of time constrants i am taking it 2x a day for 5 days)I don't want a af when he's here then after that I can think about other options?
That's great that your DH is coming home! Hope you guys have a great visit! I wish I could help you on the meds, but I'm not experienced with Provera. Anyone else?

Just wanted to say welcome, and it's wonderful that your DH is coming home for a couple of weeks. Do whatcha gotta do--we get it! I also wanted to add that I can't stand BCP. They also make my symptoms worse, and I will never try them again. You may be different; only you know how they make you feel. Just do what makes you feel best, and don't give up trying to find the best treatment for you. GL!

Welcome to SC!
I also found that bcp made things worse. From the symptoms yuo describe you might have an androgen excess that's just not showing up in your tests. I hope you find the answers you need.

When I was on BCP, I didn't know that I had PCOS. Then I began growing hair on my chin and I knew something was up, so I stopped taking the pills. Nobody figured out that I had PCOS till about 2 years later! I swore to myself and every doctor I have been to that I will NOT take bcp again. Anyways, just make sure you trust the doctor you are going to. It is the most important thing!!
Hi!! Welcome to Soul Cysters. I'm glad you found us. There is a lot of info and support here.
I started on BCP before I turned 13. They didn't really do good things for me. I began having long periods. The longest lasting 6 months. When I was 19 my period just disappeared all together. BCP often just mask the symptoms of PCOS, if they even do that much. They may work for some people, but not for me.
Going on a low carb diet helped me out a lot, too. I believe that it was the key to my getting pregnant and being able to carry my son Jamie. It really helped regulate my body a lot. It doesn't seem to help as much as it used to. A lot of people have good results on metformin.
Definately, finding the right doctor is very important. You should check out the doctor recommendations on here. Ask around, someone here will surely know a good PCOS friendly doctor in your area. As for diagnosing PCOS, there are actually five different types of PCOS. I can't remember what they are. Having 2 out of 3 of the things listed are not the only criteria.
I have been talking to an A+ RE in california. He wrote me back today with this...
Dear Jennifer, It is possible to have PCOS without elevated androgen levels. Oral contraceptives will reduce androgen production from your ovary and increase the amount of something called sex hormone binding globulin which holds more androgens in the blood stream, thereby reducing their effect upon hair growth. You can have regular withdrawal bleeding with Provera if you prefer to avoid oral contraceptive pill use. Provera will prevent excessive buildup of the uterine lining but will not alter androgen production or sex hormone binding globulin.

Good luck!
I looked the five up and this one sounds like me... I am 5'0 and 140 BMI 28 (I was 168- lost it in the last 5 months...before diagnosis- symptoms did not improve)
non-traditional PCOS --anovulatory, normal androgens, obese, insulin resistant or type 2 diabetes
What I find weird Is I got preg with my son at 20 really easy...same with my dd at 22. Then all of a sudden when my dd was 5 months old I lost my periods and was not BreastFeeding at the time. People criticize me for having my babies so young but should I be thankful? If I wated is it possible I would not have children? Is it possible to have PCOS show up so suddenly like mine?
I wanted to say Welcome and I don't think that people should be criticizing you fro having your babys young. I would have if I could have but I was 24 when I found out about pcos and 25 when i had my DS.

Is it possible to have PCOS show up so suddenly like mine?
Most of my symptoms didn't show up until I was 22 or 23 (nausea, hunger, moodswings, anxiety, etc). They started out small, but got worse over a two year period before I was finally diagnosed. It was almost as if something triggered it as I got older. It's possible that something changed after your kids were born that triggered your symptoms to become more noticeable.
Congrats on finding a good RE! Good Drs make all the difference!
