Just diagnosed: Currently a Thin Sister...wanting to STAY that way!
Hey ya'll
I was just diagnosed with PCOS. I have had irregular periods for a while and this past year and half I had gained about 10 lbs. I am currently 5'7" and 142.
I was tested once in high school and was border line (my rations for fsh and lh was 3:1)...but I went on birth control and that was that. I have always been around 130-135 ish. I went off of birth control last feb. and have had one period since then. So I decided to go back to the Dr. So far all of my tests came back pretty normal (my insulin was 6..which is really low).
Anyway, my main question is that, I realize I am relatively thin right now...but I really want to stay that way!!! I work out 4-5 times a week (run and weight train). I also have a low carb diet.
What else can I do to be sure my weight doesn't go up (and maybe to loose that 10 I put on...) Any suggestions? When I went to the dr. she really freaked me out b/c she basically said that people with pcos are always overweight...which is NOT what I wanted to hear b/c im such a health freak.
Should I still go on Metform? or should I just go back on Birth Control?
I think it's an individual thing. It sounds like you are doing the right things--a healthy diet and exercise are important. I don't think that just because a person has PCOS they are automatically going to gain weight. I think genetics and lifestyle choices have a lot to do with it.
Some people like Metformin, others don't. I don't think it did much (if anything) for me, and only made me bloated, but it's worth discussing with your doctor.
BCPs worked really well for me--I never had any problems with them, although I was one who when I stopped taking it for the first time in 8 years I immediately lost 10 pounds, so I'm trying to decide whether or not to go back on them at some point. I liked not having those 10 pounds!

KCH -- welcome. It seems pretty clear from all the literature that there are several different "types" of PCOS. Those of us that are thin that have it seem to have one or 2 types. Some of us stay thin or may gain a little weight around the middle. I put on a few pounds (like 5) in my late 20s, which I attribute more to aging metabolism. I think most of us thin cysters aren't necessarily going to become obese just because we have PCOS. We may have to be more conscious of our carb intake as we get older, but I don't think it's destiny that we all become large.
That said, it sounds like you're doing everything right. I think you should find a doctor that actually acknowledges and understands thin PCOS, b/c if a doctor thinks that all PCOSers are overweight, that doctor does not know much about PCOS (there's a pretty decent percentage of us who have never been overweight, and quite a few of us are actually underweight).
I was on Met briefly and it did make me lose weight, b/c it made me nauseated all the time. Since I went off i haven't gained any weight back. I also did fine on BCPs, with no significant gain or loss while on or off them. If you're not trying to concieve, it's probably good to be on something that willmake you cycle every so often just so your uterine lining doesn't get abnormally thick.
That's my 2 cents. BTW, I'm 5'4", currently 114 lbs (just had surgery & lost some weight), normally 116-118 lbs.

Yeah... PCOS and 3 babies later I'm still under 120 lbs at 5'4.5" so I don't think you will DEFINITELY gain weight.. some women do and some don't.

I have lower insulin too, so I'm the non IR PCOS. I am totally anovulatory when not on meds. I hope you will respond nicely to met as I did. My cycles regulated immediately, although they are lasting a bit longer, about 40 days.
I was slightly overweight for about 2 years, but it was from being pregnant and not from PCOS!! I finally lost that weight and am back at my regular size, which is in the weight range for my height - 5'4"/135lbs.
I am not much of an exerciser, I am only allowed low impact exercise anyways because of a knee problem. I try to walk 2 mi/day. Otherwise I just eat a healthy diet.

Most weight issues in women with pcos are related to lifestyle, not the pcos itself.
If you keep up a healthy, active lifestyle, and get regular check ups of your hormones, you should be able to catch any unusual weight gain LONG before it becomes a problem.
There's no chance you'll put on 50 pounds overnight.
That said, even though you're a 'thin cyster', you still need to be concerned about visceral fat.
Just being DX with PCOS I can imagine there are a lot of worries going through your mind. Some DR's just don't seem to be that educated about PCOS with thinner women. I am 5'2 and 110lbs. I have always been thin even though I have suffered with PCOS for 10 years +. I even have a 13 month old daughter after some surgery for ED and Clomid rounds. I did gain a lot of weight with my pregnancy- almost 60 lbs. But am now back to my original weight. I am not even really that good about working out, but I do eat fairly well. I say if you don't really have a history with weigh gain, I wouldn't worry too much right now. You can have PCOS and be thin.
