Hello! I was finally diagnosed last week and started on Metformin. I had a miscarriage 5 1/2 years ago (took me 2 ears to get preg) and I haven't been able to get pregnant since. DH and I have been wanting kids since we first married almost 8 years ago. I just recently have been ovuation testing and for the past 6 months I've only ovulated twice which happened after I started accupuncture. I have always had pretty regular periords, but I've always struggled with my weight. In the past 5 years my hair has thinned quite a lot and to my frustration have awful dark thick black hair on my chin and is now spreading to the sides of my face. I tried gettinhg it lasered which took care of it for about 6 months and still grew back. When I started having problems conceiving, I started to suspect PCOS. I would always ask my doctors about it and always received the same answers: "your periods are normal and so are your hormone levels so you do not have pcos." Went to new doctor after moving to this small town and expected to get same result. After a fasting blood test, I finally got the diagnosis when my insulin levels has risen. Thankfully I have a diagnosis and now can focus on getting treated!
I'm new to this as well...I also have had fairly regulary periods, but have not ovulated since July. I didn't think I had PCOS, because my sister was diagnosed a few weeks before I was and she doesn't have a period at all. But I do have PCOS and am trying to find the best options for ttc. My doctor didn't say anything about Metformin, I will mention that to him (I have also struggled with my weight). Good luck with ttc...sending lots of baby dust to you!
Hopeful Stepmom
I have been to two differnt gynocologists and neither one talked like pcos was a big deal. They didn't even talk to me about medications or treatment. I have an appt on the 19th with my gynocologist. If he doesn't talk to me more about treatment options, I think I am going to consider seeing an endo.
What do you ladies think?
HI ladies,
I was just DX with PCOS about 2 weeks ago myself and you find lots of support and info on this site, its wonderful. I am just starting Metformin and from what I read it can get some women to O. I am hopeing it will help, although I did O last month without any meds. But from what I know about met, if you have any IR and want to concieve you might want to try it. I have read several books on PCOS and they all seem to recommend it. I am a little more scared of clomid, so hoepfully the met will work all on its own. As for the Doc, mine kinda brushed it off as well, had I not known about PCOS before my DX I prolly wouldnt have taken it very seriously. Sadly I think a lot of Doc out there dont understand PCOS, but luckily there is the internet and sites like this one, so us women can get informed.
hopeful stepmom= I am having my sister go get tested for PCOS as well since she has irreg periods and PCOS is suppose to be genetic.
Good Luck with the everything, its a stressful time.
