Default Just Diagnosed with PCOS

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I was diagnosed with PCOS in late November and they started me on the Metphormin (sp) it was supposed to help me start a cycle but it doesn't seem to be doing anything but giving me a tummy ache.

I was just curious if it did help induce a period in anyone else or is does my doctor need to look at another option?

Thanks everyone.

Hi Welcome to SC. So how long are your cycles? When did you start Met? I would give it some more time. Check out the Metformin forum for more info.

Hello and Welcome!

As Cathy said, give the metformin some more time. Sometimes it can take a while before it start working.

Hello and welcome!

I think you typically need to give Metformin at least a few months to start working. What dose are you taking? The mimimum effective dose is about 1500mg, but usually they start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. I get periods on my own (irregularly) but I believe the Metformin definitely helped my hormones, and helped me get pregnant!

Thank you everyone. I've only been on the Metformin for 3 weeks. I'm not a very patient person and we have been TTC for almost a year now so I guess I was hoping everything would fall into place after the first pill, lol. Silly I know but what can you do? I'm only 1000mg right now and I'm due to go back to the OB/GYN in Jan to see how things are going. I'm sure she will adjust the dosage then if need be.

I really appreciate everyone responding, it is nice to know this site is here!

Welcome to SC!! I do think you need to give met a little longer. The upset tummy should go away soon. For some it takes a while, for others it can work right away!!!
Take a look at the met forum

Hi there! I was just recently diagnosed myself and started on Metformin two days before Thanksgiving. I take 1000 mg a day, and felt really bad for the first three weeks. It's only been in the past four or five days that I've started feeling like my old self again.

I had a period the week after starting Metformin, but I've always been pretty regular and the only difference I noticed was that it was kind of heavier than normal. I'm on the met primarily to help with insulin resistance and weight loss, instead of TTC or to bring on AF etc. Every now and then I'd miss a period, but I'd be on time the next month. Anyway, I can't really advise about bringing on AF with Metformin, but I just thought I'd let you know that the stomach problems with Met do go away eventually. I thought it would never end! but I'm finally much better. Not 100%, but better. I am still tired all the time, and I'd sleep until noon if I didn't have to get up, but I do feel better.

The worst part is the waiting. Results can take a while. Good luck!

First off welcome! You might find this site helpful. Did you know there are five different types of PCOS?

Thanks again everyone for your replies. Still waiting on AF and I can't believe I would ever look forward to having one. But I haven't had one since I stopped taking the bcp in March. They tried to force one with the progestrone, but nothing happened. My OB/GYN called me the other day to see how the Met was going and I told her nothing was happening. She said that we would try the progestrone in Jan again if I don't have one before then. She said that would work for sure and then we try clomid. Wow, I'm really spilling my guts here and I fill like one of those old ladies complaining about how many times she had to get up and pee last night, lol. I guess I've never really had any health problems and then this came out of the blue and I feel broken. I know I'm not, it is just how I feel at the moment. LOL, now I just sound sad.
