Default Just Diagnosed With PCOS Today

Hi Everyone. I am new here and have some questions.. I was offically diagnosed today with PCOS. I am very confused and upset all in the same. I am a 30 yr old woman with two girls. I had a tubal ligation when my younger daughter was about 6 months old(she is now 7). Anyhow, since the tubal ligation, I have gained weight off and on.. packing on more pounds and not being able to lose no matter what I try. I suffer from anxiety and depression and am currently on Paxil for that. I have also had problems with my cycles since having my tubes tied. Recently I went 4 months without a cycle.
The doc put me on progesterone, and then I had a cycle. Then I went another 2 1/2 months with nothing and recently had a cycle without progesterone. This all happened within the last few months.
My worry is this, how can I try to lose the weight? The doc today put me on Glucophauge. He said it will help some. I also had tested high for levels of testosterone which I never knew us women had. I have to have a lipid test done come Monday. I am so scared about all this because it is so new to me. I am sorry if I am rambling. My thoughts are so jumbled right now.
Is PCOS classified as a disease? I asked the doc when it could have come up. He said that I probably have had the signs and symptoms all along for PCOS and they are now catching it. The other thing is that heart disease and such runs in my family.
Can anyone give me a little bit of insight on how to handle all this?? My world has been turned upside down in a matter of a day.
Thanks so much for letting me ramble on.. I know some of this doesn't probably make sense.. I apologize.. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Sunshine4u7

I am also in my 30's (36) and have 2 beautiful children, 11 and 5 yrs old. I was just diagnosed with PCOS and the doctor also found a spot on my uteran wall that needs further investigating. My doctor said all my hormone levels checked out normal, however, a week later after an internal unltrasound I am told I have PCOS. My symptoms have been going on a while, extreme weight gain, facial hairs (not bad a few here and there, enought to notice), acne more so than normal, and a strange pain, like a muscle is being stretched to far when I am laying down and I cough or turn in an odd way, my lower right side will hurt. Well, dont feel alone, I am rambling as well, and just as confused and scared as you are. PCOS is not a disease at this point they label it a syndrome because the sympoms vary from woman to woman. I do know that it can be controled with birth control pills (but in my case I have to do hormone therapy because of my high blood pressure and I am a smoker). Heart disease to runs high in my family all my uncles and my grandfather died of heart disease and my grandmother of cervical cancer. I would consult your physician if your worried about heart issues related to PCOS. And one last thing, my menstrual cycle wasnt stopping completly it was getting closer together and would last much longer than it used to, also I would pass huge clots as well. Well sunshine, I hope this helps you some. God bless and take care!!

Oh I forgot about the weight gain. Talk to your doctor about a calorie modified diet. Plus exercise is key. If you dont have a membership at a gym, go to the library and check out some exercise books, my library also has dvd's and videos (we have dennise austin, sweating to the oldies, etc.) with exercise routines on them, very helpfull. And one last thing to note, read up on Kat's story, something about her medicines side effects were weight gain I believe. Well enough rambling, again I hope this eases your mind a bit....Keep in touch...we need all the support we can get!!!!

Thank you for replying.. I will have to look up more info on the low carb thing. I asked my doc what I need to do now about the weight and I got no answer. I am all in all in good health but for a woman of my height ( 5'2") I should weigh anywhere from 118-130 max. Well, as of Friday I weigh 212. I have packed on the weight since I had my younger daughter in 97. Also in 97 is when I had my tubes tied. Since then I have also had my gall bladder removed a couple yrs ago. Everything seems to add up though with all the symptoms I haave with PCOS. I guess the docs that I saw before I had no clue what was going on with me and I must have been diagnosed for the last 5-6 yrs. I am irritated too, because my husband doesn't know what I am going through. Intimacy is null and void, and has been for awhile. I think it has a lot to do with my weight, and my esteem being very low.
How do I get over the esteem issues? I am all in all a positive person when it comes to helping others. But when it comes to me, well, I clam up. Anyone feel the same?

Thanks again for the suggestions and responses. It is nice to know I am not alone in this.

I watch Jimmy Evans on TV and he makes a lof of sense when it comes to intamacy in marriage. check out the site and see if it helps you.

We also watched Gary Chapman on TV and he is an expert on a lot of issues related to marriage.

Jimmy Evans actually just did a group discussion with women on this topic. It was pretty cool. The women talked about how they felt when their DH's were in the mood and they were not, and why they were not. DH and I enjoyed the program, but I'm glad we get to watch for free I hope Jimmy does a discussion with their DH's next so we get to see the other side of the coin. Since I'm at home all day I watch it when I can. His explantion of how women and men see intamacy in totally different ways was neat. He gave tips on how to use certain terms that men understand to get thru to them how we are feeling.

Default Intimacy

Yes I have felt the same way regarding intimacy. I know mine has been both my weight gain and not feeling well. However, I have a very understanding husband who supports me in any situation, so I am blessed regarding that issue. Communication is key in any relationship that you want to succeed. Talk to your husband, let him look at some of the postings on this site, and be honest and he needs to do the same. The only way to get through trouble times is with support and love from our family and friends. Tell him that...tell him you need him!! I know I have and if its not coming through right, maybe counseling would be an idea, just to make it through this ordeal with PCOS. Good luck and God Bless!

Thank you. He is an understanding and loving man. He said he is just giving me a hard time. But a "hard time" is what I am going through with just being diagnosed and not knowing what will come next. I had a lipid test done as of yesterday 12-14-04 and have to wait for those results to come back. I am so thanksful I found this site.
Will post again soon.

The lipid test I believe tests cholesterol levels and insulin levels. I know it checks the cholesterol but unsure on the insulin levels.. If I am wrong can someone clarify for me.. are there other tests tha tmay need to be done?

Hi! Did your dr suggest a CBC? (Complete Blood Counts) I know that my Gynecologicist did and although I am disappointed with the results, am very happy and thankful that she did. It turns out that I have Diabetes Type 2. I have had PCOS for over 10 years now, but was able to conceive and give birth to my son 8-1/2 years ago. I know that my dad died from diabetes with complications of heart disease and cancer. Please listen to all of your drs suggestions and don't delay on the advise. My gp last year didn't have the updated guidelines and let my fasting glucose number slide by him. I'm lucky that this years numbers were not too too high. They just slipped into the diabetic range. My gyno moved me to an endocrinologist and she put me on Metformin. Between that and diet, I believe that I am finally losing the weight that I have gained over the past.

Take care and best of luck,
