Hello,
I was just diagnosed with PCOS a few weeks ago. I am 25 years old. I am taking prometrium to start my period, but that is all. My husband and I want to try to conceive in March of next year, and My gyn. said I would probably have to take clomid to do so. I am a normal weight, 5'7" and 140 lbs., and my gyn. told me not to lose weight because that part of PCOS does not apply to me.
Questions:
1. Are the risks and severity of PCOS the same for overweight women as opposed to normal weight women?
2. What has been your experience with trying to conceive on clomid...I read all the awful statistics about miscarriage and how hard it is to conceive with PCOS, and I am worried.
3. Should I be worried about my insulin? Although, I am not overweight, I do not eat well...a lot of carbs and sugar...I am actively trying to change that though...will that possibly start my period by eating better?
The severity of PCOS differs from woman to woman whether overweight or not. I don't know much about clomid personally (i haven't ever tried it) but I have heard an equal amount of positive and negative things about it. I think that too works different for everyone.
I would worry about your overall health and try to eat a healthier diet. I was told as a thin cyster to be careful about my diet because I am at higher risk for type II diabetes. I would imagine you are too? Only blood tests could determine that. I think an overall healthy diet will help alot of health issues, but take baby steps so you don't end up binging on anything
Hi Jen
I have done 2 rounds of clomid and O'd on both but haven't conceived. I think it works differently for everyone. You can only try I guess. I personally want to try metformin next as I have read it can work better for thin cysters. All the best with what ever you try.
I am 41 years old I have had PCOS all my life. well as far back as I can remember. I am 5'10 i always weighed 150 which is thin for my height, i never watched what i ate because i thought that part did not apply to me. but it does.
Staying thin and fit, you can have a better chance of conceiving. I had a baby at 25 years old no problem at all. the doc was surprised, but you need to eat right and stay thin and may sure your hormones are where they are supposed to be.
I now have gained lots of weight i am over 185 and trying so hard to get it down because once you gain with PCOS it is so hard to lose.
My advise to you is to go to an Endercrinologist and have them test all your hormones levels, DHEA, testosterone, etc... and let you know what you need as far as meds and what to do to stay healthy then you will be able to conceive.
I am new here, just diagnosed. I am thin, but not trying to get pregnant. I have done a lot of research, though, and from what I have read it seems that you should worry about your insulin. I think many people use metformin, a drug for diabetes, to regulate the insulin and thus lower testosterone and help you conceive. I also read that taking vitamin d helps women with pcos get pregnant. In another article I read that low vitamin d is associated with insulin resistance...
Hi Jen,
Welcome. I would get your insulin level checked just to make sure it is OK. I was shocked to find out a few months ago that I was insulin resistant as I've been healthy all my life. Luckily I found a doctor that listens.
I've gone through about 6 rounds of Clomid since March 2008 - from 50 to 150mg and then 50mg with Metiform. I only O'd once. I'll now be trying more aggressive IF drugs. I'm not sure if it was the Clomid or just stress from TTC but I was really emotional when I took Clomid.
Good luck!

I am thin and have PCOS. My doctor didn't think I would have insulin resistance and at my urging tested. Well turns out I have it. I was put on the metformin to assist in my efforts of getting pregnant. It made a huge difference for me though. It was nice to not be constantly hungry or so impatient to eat that I would snap at people. I'm not sure if I ovulated before it, although I suspect that I did, but I do when I am on it. I do not need clomid to get pregnant, it's happened three times on its own. As for my experience with Clomid, it made me crazy, I really did not like it, but if my doctor recommended it, I would probably take it again. A healthy diet can make a huge difference but I still struggle with that because of the insulin resistance and addiction to sugar.
I also have mild acne but I took Saw Palmetto before getting pregnant and it cleared it right up.
Good luck,
Carrie

Thanks so much for all the replies! It helps to be supported by women who know what I am going through. After taking the prometrium last month to start my period, I started on my own 27 days later. I am going to check to see if I am ovulating in 14 days. Maybe the prometrium jump started my cycles again? ( I am hoping). I am still working on trying to eat plenty of fruits and veggies, and stay away from the carbs, so I am hoping that will help too. We have decided to try in January instead of March...I just feel like this major life decision is too important to wait anymore. I will keep you updated on my situation...thanks again!
I don't know anything about TTC but I do know it's important for thin cysters to watch carbs/sugar and SUPER important if you want to start ovulating. Go on the insulin resistance diet, it works wonders!

Yeah, I'm a little confused about the weight issue myself. During my teen years I was on the very low end of a normal weight, extremely athletic too. My symptoms were far worse because I had no treatment, med wise. I'm starting to wonder what my Dr would have done about these symptoms back then, even if they were using the met to treat pcos at that time. From my experience Met has been a life saver!!!! In many ways...I'm very grateful to be on it. In may take a while (could be a few years) to balance your system out. It just needs time to get rid of the extra hormones in order to start ovulation. The longer you've gone without treatment...the longer it will probably take. My advice is too not let it go for long. The depression & weight issues will sneak up very quickly!
