HI ladies.. I just got some bloodwork back and my doc called to say i have hypo.. and put me on synthriod 50mcg and over the past 6months i gained 50lbs,reason for seeking a doc in the first place (about the crazy weight gain) I realize this is not a weightloss drug, but what i am wondering is does it help with losing the weight at all, with the help of exercise and diet of course?Because I think if I gain anymore i'm and going to go nuts!Any comments would help this low self esteem i have developed about my weight...Thank you in advance...
First of all, Synthroid has been known to cause water weight gain. Secondly, if your body isn't converting T4 to T3 adequately, you may need the addition of a T3 med or switch to natural thyroid hormone (i.e. Armour). To find out if you need T3, you need to have a Free T3 test performed. Your result should be at least in the middle of the lab range (best if it is in the upper quadrant). T3 is the "metabolism" thyroid hormone, and if it's low you will continue to have problems with your weight.
So, ask your doc if he/she will run a Free T3 test for you, and if they refuse then find a doc who will, or get it done yourself by using healthcheckusa (you order the test online, go to a lab near you, then they send you the results). Here's a link:

Hey, weight is just on the outside. It is not who you are. Obviously is it the symptom of a medical problem. You are a beautiful person with an illness. I don't think someone with chicken pox would feel a low self worth becasue he has red spots. I gained weight very rapidly, too. All I did to trigger it was stop taking birth control pills. I had no idea what was goin on as I ate normal and excercised like before. With treatment and good advice I have been able to slowly lose some of it. Turns out my "mysterious" weight gain was caused by my having four different illnesses that contribute to obesity. I think you will be able to control your weight more normally when you get the right meds to the right dosage. There's always hope, don't be sad.
