Hi Everyone, my name is mel, I am 22 and i have just today been diagnosed with pcos. Although this is a releif to have some answers after 3-4 years of terrible troubles I am scared stiff as all i want to do is have a baby. i've been reading articles that tell me that miscarriages and infertility are very common in pcos. I am absolutely heartbroken just thinking about what the future will bring me babywise, as if its not devastating enough already! I also have alot of diabetes in me family. Every1 around me is having babies and this is so depressing to think that i may never be able to.can any1 give me some advice and tips about getting pregnant dealing with pcos or anything else that may be useful. Also can any1 tell me about the medication and what is involved. Thanx nice to meet every1. Mel Z
It is really distressing when you are first diagnosed. What I found very helpful was reading through the messages here, and seeing how many of the women have kids. If they can do it then so can we! I am hoping to start a family soon too, and like you I am really scared. My husband seems totally oblivious to the fact that there is actually something wrong with me. I started taking met (glucophage) just over six months ago and I won't lie to you, it made me feel really ill. But I seem to be through the worst of it now, apart from frequent trips to the toilet! My doc put me on the pill too, to control my hormone levels and make sure I bleed each month (apparently it can be dangerous if you don't??). Apart from that I am just trying to eat sensibly. I find the GI diet the easiest to follow, and I went down a whole jeans size in 3 months! The hardest thing is when we go to someones house for dinner and I have to refuse desert and end up having to explain the whole saga. I have decided now to allow myself that treat, and if we do go out for dinner I make sure I eat really sensibly during the day so I can have that treat!
It has taken me almost a year, but I feel I am coming to terms with it now. It is so good to know there are other people out there going through the same things as me.
Thanx for your support. I didnt realise there was a site like this for pcos i just looked it up to get some info and stumbled across this site. I did not realise it was as common as it is and it is reassuring to know that im not alone in this and there are so many people out there that feel the same as i do and have the same fears. I am learning alot just by reading the articles and message boards and im sure that by chatting to others in the same situation i will come to terms with it alot easier. So i'll just have to read up and talk to people and get the right treatment and hope for the best. Trying to stay positive!
Thanx again,
Mel
Trying to stay positive is a really good start. Welcome to Soulcysters. Glad you're learning about PCOS as you're reading posts and articles. There's a lot to know, and it probably won't take long until you know more than your doctor. In a way that's really helpful too b/c then you'll know what kind of treatment you'll want and how to pursue it.
I'm happy for you to be diagnosed fairly young. That means you've still got time to get your hormones straightened out and hopefully have that baby soon that you want so much. Yes it might be more difficult, then again it might not. It took me three years almost, but really most of that time was wasted not knowing what was wrong with me. You have that advantage over me, plus you're so much younger. Once I was diagnosed, I started on Metformin which made a world of difference to my body, and I was pregnant within a year. You're looking at a true Metformin miracle in my sig line picture.
I wish you all the best. Look around, learn, ask questions. See you around.

I have a question, how is it that all of you are losing weight!! It has always beena struggle for me and i work my butt off with no results. Everyone is referring to metformin, does this really help you lose weight? is it easy or hard? i am asking this because i have been diagnosed with pcos yesterday, but have to wait 3 weeks to see my gyn, to discuss pcos and treatment. I live in Australia so is there anything the eqivalent to metformin or any other great meds that i can get my hands on over here in aus?
Thanx, Mel

Melz....you must get and read 'The Insulin Resistant Diet'. For a lot of us (I believe) it has truly changed how we feel and think about food and helps us lose weight. I have started a major exercise plan also. It takes hard work and it takes SOOO much time. Also, a lot of girls have lost weight on Metformin (im trying to get it too). Another name for Metformin is Glucophage, it should be available with prescription in Australia. It is a very common drug for treating diabetes. But, it helps girls with PCOS even if they do not have diabetes. It regulates the over production of insulin in our bodies, which causes weight gain-especially around the middle.

acrowe is right, Metformin is not only avalaible in the States. I live in Germany and get it too. It takes more convincing the doctors though b/c it's not a recognized treatment for PCOS here yet. But that's why you need to do your homework. No one will be your advocate but YOU. Read and maybe print some articles so you can inform your doc why you might benefit from it. And don't tell him you hope it'll help you lose weight. It's not a weight loss drug (though for many it has that added benefit) and doctors will not give it to you to lose weight.
In your case, since there's a history of diabetes in the family, have you been tested for Insulin Resistance? If not, get it done, and if your fasting insulin is higher than 10, you should have a good case in favor of Metformin.
I also wanted to say I only lost weight b/c I also exercised and changed my way of eating. I went on the IR Diet and loved it. It's sensible and fairly easy to follow. You do need the book though, at least in the beginning.
Good luck!

I think when i got all my blood tests they did an insulin resistance or something like that, at the time i was more worried about the needles than what they were testing me for!! But they did quite a few... I'll have to check out the diets. I need an eating plan put in front of me otherwise its all too hard!! I have a feeling i'll be getting plenty of books to read. So thanx every1 for your tips and advice i'll be sure to pass it on to my doc when i see her. I was pretty impressed with her so im hoping she will get me onto some good treatments.
Does anyone know what the costs of the meds are like also?
The whole thing hasnt really sunk in just yet, but im not looking forward to when it does.
Thanx everyone once again
Mel
