I came across this site while looking up information about PCOS. I'm 28 and was just diagnosed yesterday, however I won't be able to get back in to see my doctor until tomorrow. The nurse that told me my diagnosis over the phone didn't give me ANY information on it at all. So the only stuff I know, is from the information I've found on the internet. Of course the internet lists every possible risk, side effect, etc...so I'm freaking out over here. Not to mention my husband is out of town on business so I'm dealing with this on my own. I guess I just need to vent, so thank you for listening. Like a lot of the other posts I've read, I too have always been irregular, but I've been on and off of birth control for a long time, and I just assumed I was "ok" just irregular cycles. Now that I've been off of bc for 2 months and my husband and I want to have a child...we realized it's something more than just irregularity. The strange thing is though, the only REAL symptom I have are the irregular periods...I'm an average weight, no excess hair, I had acne when I was younger but took meds for it and am okay now....so my question is...do you have to have ALL the symptoms to have PCOS or just a few? SHould I get a second opinion or go see a specialist or continue with my regular obgyn? And lastly, I'm worried because I want to be a mother more than anything...and all the internet sites say that this is the #1 cause for infertility and there is a 45% chance of miscarriage!! That's pretty high!! I guess I'm just looking for success stories to set my mind at ease a bit.
Sorr to ramble on, thanks again for listening and it's nice to meet all you ladies!
Welcome to SC. You have found your way to the right place. Alot of women only have a few of the symptoms. I have the weight gain, irregular cycles, and a bit of facial hair. There are some things that go along with the PCOS that cause the other symptoms. IR causes the weight gain but not everyone who has PCOS has IR. Everyone is different. As for Trying to concieve..... Alot of women with PCOS have a hard time with it but it isnt unheard of or a rare thing for a cycter to have a child. Check out the TTC and mother boards. They gave me alot of hope. I have had PCOS since I was 15, though I didnt know it until about 2 years ago. I am also 28 and dont have a baby of my own but I am hoping for one in the next few years. It is something I am not rushing because I think that makes it harder to concieve due to the stress. Which I have found makes the symptoms worse for me. I am currently taking a break from the meds, and just de-stressing my life has cause me to at least spot for the past 2 months.... that surprised me. I havent had a cycle on my own since they stopped at 15. Anyways sorry for the long post, if you need anything at all please PM me anytime
As looking4hope explained, everyone is different. You don't have to have all of the symtoms to have PCOS. I understand how scared you are about ttc, I was too. Luckily I have a great gyn, she told me that women with PCOS have children all the time, and that we can get there. So can you. As for your dr., it never hurts to get a second opinion, and not to sound rude, but don't look for one that will tell you what you want. I was actually told by a dr that some women just have irrigular periods, no reason why, they just do. My dr now said that was balonga! Women should always have regular periods unless their pregnant or going through menopause.
I know it seems difficult, and I'm so sorry that your Dh isn't here with you, it can be tough dealing with this alone. But now, your not alone. This community of cyster's is wonderful and these women are amazing.
I know how hard this can be, so if you ever need to talk, you can pm me anytime.
Thank you both SO much for the advice, it really means a lot to me to know that there are others out there to talk to and who are going thru the same thing. And you're right HoneyBear (cute name btw)...I don't want to find a doctor that just tells me what I want to hear. I too went to several doctors over the year that told me the same thing...that irregularity just happens to some women, and all they did was throw birth control at me. I guess although it's not the best of news, at least now I know what it is and we can deal with it. I have my first appointment with my doctor tomorrow afternoon to go over options and my specific results, so I'll keep you updated. Thanks again and it's great to meet both of you!!!
Goodness! We almost sound like twins. I was 10 years old when i had my first cycle and it seemed after that every dr always wanted to throw the pill at me or tell me to loose weight (I have ALOT of the symtoms). But now, it sounds like you have a dr who has taken the time to actually dx you. Like you i was terrified that I wouldn't be able to have children, but my dr seems hopeful and after talking with my cysters, I have more hope now than i did before I was dx!
Things will get better and you will learn how to cope. Besides, we're here for you anytime you need us. You can always pm me whenever you need to, whether it's just to chat or because you need a shoulder.
A tip: Whenever you feel like things are getting to be too much, take a deep breathe and tell yourself that you are a wonderful woman and you can do this. (I get on here if that doesn't work! lol) Also, the next time you go in to see your dr, you may want to take in a list of questions, so that you don't forget anything. I did, it helped.
Thanks for the compliment.
Please do keep us informed, I'd like to know how things go for you.
Welcome to SC!
You will find that this site is very informative and the girls here are so supportive.
I can only say that the symptoms of this syndrome are as diverse as the ladies who have it.
I wish you all the best1
I can completely relate to you! My hubby moved a few days after I got diagnosed with PCOS and I am not moving until end of next week (we are relocating). I have been so heartbroken over the diagnosis too. So you are not alone.
Anyway, I did want to shed some light on ttc for you. I do have a 19 month old daughter. I assume I have had PCOS for a long time because it took about 2-2.5 years not trying to get pregnant or trying to prevent it, for us to get pregnant. There is no telling how long it actually took, but I have a healthy little girl now. And from all other sites I have been to, there are a lot of women (like pp have said) with PCOS that do get pregnant. I can understand being scared, because even after having a successful pregnancy, I am too. A friend with PCOS told me that it isn't that bad (she doesn't ovulate on her own & has irregular periods only-so similar to you). She also said that PCOS doesn't prohibit you from having children, it just makes it more challenging. And I am definitely trying to see it from that point of view.
Welcome - you almost sound like me. I was just told, and not given much info, so I found all this scary sounding stuff on the internet.
How were you diagnosed? I am not sure I even have it, though something is worng. Basically, my doctor is going on my lack of period for 3.5 months now and a bad lh/fsh ratio. That;s it. And I have never ever even been irrgular, not overweight, no IR, etc.
I am going to follow up with an re I think. What is your doc planning? I am not very impressed with my ob/gyn on this. I don't think she knows a lot about it, and doesn't have further testing in mind. She just wants me to take progesterone to make me have a period.
Welcome to SC! Don't be scared! This site is full of information and the ladies on here are sooo helpful! I'm just like you...I really want to be a mommy sooo bad. It will happen for us, it just takes us longer

Thank you all SOO much for your advice...I feel better already already knowing that I'm not alone and I have so many wonderful new friends I can talk to about it. It really means a lot to me to know you all are there. Thanks again!!!!!!!
Vicky....good luck with the move! I know that has to be tough right in the middle of all of this!! I'm here too if you ever need to talk (that goes for all of you). =)
And Honeybear...that IS weird...we must be distantly related somehow!! lol
Glad to meet you. I was diagnosed 8 yrs ago (now 28 as well). This is the nest site I have found for info and support. Not everyone exp. all the symptoms and side effects of PCOS. It does not mean that you are infertile, many women get pregnant with medical intervention. I convinced myself I would never be a mom and my twins are due in a few weeks now. The best advice is to read whatever you can about PCOS, get a good dr, and metformin is the best drug I would recommend to help maintain blood sugars and possible weight loss, and prevent diabetes.

It is the primary cause of infertility, but infertility does not mean childlessness, it means diff with conception. I never had periods on my own and was on the pill for years to have one. I took myself off it, started 1500 mg metformin to see if they would start on their own (many women can get preg on met alone). There is a link between insulin resistance and PCOS (infertility) and soemtimes sugars regulate and women ovulate and get preg with met. This was not my case. I still continued taking it to prevent diabetes and added provera and clomid to the mix. Provera is progesterone which helps induce Af (period-aunt flo) which I take for 5 days, clomid is a fertility drug which may induce ovulation you take 4-5 days at the beginning of your cycle. Unfortunatley, cloimd did not work for me. So we upped the ante with injectable drugs-FSH. We started seeing a Reproductive Endocrinologist and it worked our first cycle. I took provera to induce AF and then injections for 12 days to ovulate. Voila, now I am due with twins in a few weeks. It has taken 3 years of actively trying (plus breaks in between) and was an emotional journey, well worth it once I see my babies. So I am an example of a woman who has never had a period on her own who is soon to be a mommy.

That's so awesome. I'm very happy for you. How exciting. Your story gives me hope. I am in the process of trying to get healthy so I can ttc next fall. I've been a little worried that there is a possibility of not being able to, but you give me hope.
Thank you for that!! Good luck! Hey, I hope you post some pics after they get here, we'd love to see!!
