I am 29 years old and have been with my husband for 11 years (married 4 years). All these years I have had irregular periods, weight gain, facial hair growth, etc etc. 4 months ago found out about cysts on my ovaries.
I so desperately want a baby and only today realized with my Gyn that I have PCOS. I have been working with my Gyn for 4 years. He had regulated my periods, put me on clomid, cleaned by tubes, then cleaned them again with a dye and putting me out for a lyproscopsy.
Today I saw him and he said there is only one more thing he can do for me and that is the ovarian drilling. After that I would need to go to a fertility specialist.
He said that the ovarian drilling will put less weight on the ovaries to give my ovaries a chance to produce eggs.
He said I don't PRODUCE EGGS? After all these years, I find that out now?
I am at a loss, very depressed and don't know what to think or do.
I feel like I am going to be 30 and why couldn't I have found this out earlier in life so I could've made the lifestyle changes required for me to have a chance at conceiving.
Can anyone out there shed some light or hope that this ovarian drilling may work and help my husband and I to conceive?
Would you say that my only chance is the fertility specialist....how long until you conceive after seeing them?
I asked my doctor if there was anything I could do to help my ovaries produce eggs such as changing my diet etc, he said no. He said but try to keep your weight down and prescribed for me metmorfin AGAIN.
I am so sorry to hear about all your troubles!! but all is not lost! 30 is still young, so don't fret! and if you look st my thread i started under Diet & Exercise, I have an article about women who don't take meds, they just changed their diet and started to ovulate.. It would be worth looking into.
Be sure to use this and other websites to gather as much info as you can. Knowledge is the best weapon against something like PCOS!! And all of us cysters are here to help and support you. PCOS is not the end of the world (although it does feel like it sometimes) you just need to learn how to deal with it.. be sure to PM me if you are having probs or if you have any questions. I will help in every way that I can! Good luck!

oh yeah, and don't be afraid to try new doctors.. as I have learned... not all doctors are the best for dealing with PCOS. A second opinion might be worth your while.

Just wanted to say that when I had my ultrasound to determine if I had PCOS the guy said that on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the most serious case of PCOS he had ever seen that I was about a nine. For me a combination of changing my diet, exercising four times a week and taking 1000mg of Metformin did the trick. I would definitely seek a second opinion before going down the ovarian drilling route, problems with this procedure have been documented.
Welcome! I'm glad you have found soul cysters. I'm also 29 -- will be 30 in a few weeks -- and only found out this year that PCOS is the reason I've never had regular periods....
Don't despair, there are MANY things that can be tried besides clomid. I would recommend going to an RE (reproductive endocrinologist, fertility specialist) IMMEDIATELY. I'd ask the RE's opinion about whether ovarian drilling is really the best option for you, and talk about what sort of a plan they can come up with for you. While some ob/gyn's are great, I think most ob/gyn's don't really have the training to deal with PCOS. If your been seeing the Gyn about this for 4 years, I think it's time to see an RE. Some women get good results with an RE after just a few months.
How long have you been on the Metformin? A lot of cyster have had positive results with Metformin, either alone, or in combination with fertility drugs. In terms of changing your diet, probably the best thing is just to stay away from sugar and carbohydrates as much as possible.
Anyway, talk to the other cysters on this website....between us all there is a wealth of knowlegde and experience.

As a previous poster mentioned, 30 is still young, so you've still got plenty of time. Ovarian drilling does help some women to get PG. I work for an RE and one of our patients who recently did IVF had ovarian drilling done before she did the IVF and she got PG. I would check further into it though to find out more of the benefits and risks.
How does your Dr know that you are not ovulating? You mentioned that your cycles were irregular before and that your dr has been able to help you have regular cycles now. Do you chart or use OPKs to see if you are ovulating?
I can understand your fear of going to a fertility specialist but when you think about it, they are the ones to go to if you are having trouble getting PG and also for PCOS. While there are a lot of good OB/GYN Drs out there who are good at treating PCOS and infertility, there are also those who aren't as good at it. (Sounds like your Dr is one of the ones who's pretty good at it. He sounds like he's doing the right things with you.) OB/GYN's are more specialized in pregnant women and women's health and most don't work as much with infertility. They can only take you so far. Fertility specialists deal with infertility all day long every day. I would do what you feel comfortable with.
Ask away if you've got more questions. You are welcome to PM me anytime if you want!

Laura..glad that you are feeling better now that you have found this site. There's a very supportive group of women here and lots of great info. As far as what sort of diet you should be on, I guess it all depends on if you are wanting to lose weight or just eat better overall. My suggestion for whatever you do is don't go too extreme with whatever diet you decide to try. If you want to just eat healthier, I would say just cut back on the carbs, eat more whole grain, and cut back or cut out sugar.
Again, welcome!!

I am new to the board but wanted to share something that may work for you. I wasn't able to get pregnant and had been on Met and read a book called The Yeast Connection and the Woman It talks about taking oral nystatin for many things including pregnancy. You don't have to have visible yeast infections to have systematic yeast. I did this with Met and was pregnant with both my kids in about a month. I also told someone else about it who had been on clomid and other fertility drugs and she also got pregnant...worth a try!
Hope is DEFINITELY not lost. If you go to the "Trying to Conceive" and/or the "Pregnant Cysters" board, you will bear witness to the growing number of miracles we experience daily at SoulCysters. Trust me when I say that there are women older and in far worse condition than you who have acheived pregnancy. Matter-of-fact, a dear friend of mine (on this website) turned 30 today. She is also 13weeks pregnant!!
Most of us have "anovulatory" cycles without medication and/or assistance. Has your DH had a s/a done yet? If not, an RE will definitely have that test performed to make sure that you don't have the "Male Factor" as well as PCOS problems. If DH's s/a comes back normal, consider yourself lucky and if all other tests come back fine then you will move on to the next phase, which would be treatment.
This is where you find out what works for you and what doesn't. This usually takes a couple of months, but try not to stress out about time/age/etc. because it doesn't help your TTC efforts. Follow the advice of your RE and continue moving forward.
As everyone else has said, an RE is really your best option for quick advancement. It should not have taken 4 years to diagnose PCOS if you have all the classic symptoms *AND* string-of-pearl-like cysts. That sounds very odd to me.
Best of Luck and you will find a WEALTH of knowledge here.
