Default just found out for sure

just found out i am hypo... i am being put on t3 meds...and found out i have low magnesium and low ferritin... and that my insulin is still too high...not to mention my sex binding hormone is too low..so i have to have estrogen and progesterone tested...
i cannnnnnnnot tell you how horrible i have felt for years...
my tsh is 3.6 which i guess isnt that bad...but from what i have been reading anything over 2 makes some people feel horrrrrible...my t3 and t4 are low in the ranges....

i have some questions.... my iron per say was okay but my ferritin is too low..whats the difference if they are both iron... my ferritin was 11 and range was 10-145..........

i am totally overwhelmed..not to mention cannot find a pill case that can hold all my meds and supplements arghshshshs

so i will be taking t3 in the morning..waiting six hours till i start other meds.... then i am supposed to take 2 mag pills 3x a day... 3 iron pills a day.... omegga fatty fish oil thingies 3 a day.... then up my glucophage to 2000xrmg a day, then my effexor for panic , atenatol 100 mg for rapid heart rate....
then to top it off bc i have major sleep problems to try trazadone at night and see if it helps.... geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeshhhh i am sooooooooooo overwhelmed...but this doctor is awesome...and he cares and is sooo smart...

he says i have pcos/hypothyroid/chronic fatigue/fibro etcetc...

umm maybe this should be under rant section...

i knew for years my thryoid was goofy but now i have proof..but i didnt know bout the mag and ferritin... or the sexbinding..athough i did test once for way low estrogen.... all of this scares me considering i am pretty much just turning 26 and i do want kids.... oh well

thanks so much for listening and i will be on this forum much more..wish me luck xoxoxox jennn

Jenn--

You are going to feel so much better in the near future that you will forget all about being overwhelmed right now. I cannot tell you how good you'll feel---you have just forgotten how good feeling normal is. Fibromyalgia and hypo go hand in hand.

When I was diagnosed they couldn't even measure my TSH in the lab---they thought it was an error and made me come in again. Same result. I noticed a difference within about 4-6 weeks. They gradually adjusted my dosage to my current maintenance dose and what a difference! I do normal activities, have normal energy levels, etc. You can look forward to that too!

I also remember reading something about magnesium levels----I take supplements which help. I think thyroid meds can have a negative impact on magnesium levels.

I can't help you with the ferritin, as I'm not familiar with that. But, thank goodness you're diagnosed. You're on your way to better health.

Best of luck!
Kelly

Been there, done that, I have some sincere advice for you!

#1) Don't take plain magnesium. It will make your body parts feel warm and tingly, sometimes in a painful fashion. Take calcium/magnesium combination pills. You need twice as much calcium as magnesium, and if your ratio gets out of whack things will go haywire.

#2) Low ferritin has all the same symptoms as anemia, only it comes and goes instead of staying constant. To alleviate this take iron. Don't take the 325mg iron pills the doctor gives you. Those are the worst possible iron to take. They WILL constipate you and since you are hypo you do NOT need more constipation! Instead, go to the vitamin store and look for "gentle iron" veggie caps. Ask the salesperson for exactly that. They will come as 25mg pills, usually; take 1 with lunch and 1 with dinner. The reason for the huge difference in dosage is that the gentle iron veggie caps will absorb 10x better than the pills your doctor gives you at 325mg. Those pills stick in your gut and leave tons of iron residue in your intestine, which causes the constipation. The veggie caps do not do any of this; they absorb just like eating iron in food, and are much better for you.

Good luck.

dear shena....
the dr i saw ..when i asked about using cal with mag he said in his experience people with cfs symptoms sometimes feel worse on calcium...so i will ask him again how it absorbs..

the iron pills he gave me are reacted iron.. 29 mgs..and he said take 3 a day...

this dr is western med... but also carries a whole store practically of vitamins and supplements....so from what you said i think the iron ones he gave seem okay?? i never even heard about 325 mg ones...geeeeesh lol

so i took the t3 today and didnt feel anything.... i was worried it would make my heart racy or something....

oh one more question..like i asked the girl above.... what are or where your tsh levels etc..and how are they now????

xxoxox jenn

During initial diagnoses, my TSH jumped all 'round. It started out at 0.16 while I was still on bcp. I quit bcp to TTC and it jumped up to 0.04! I was quite hyper. Then I fell, sank like the titanic. Next test came back 25.16 :o They were cruel, heartless doctors and made me wait... and tested me again... it was 5.83 then. At that point I figured the docs and went to see a new one, a naturopath who now manages my care. She put me on armour (t3 and t4) and we try to keep my tsh about 0.5-1.5. It's difficult as my needs keep changing. They change cyclicly per my menstrual cycle, and whenever something messed up happens with my hormones (like my pregnancy and miscarriage).

Lately we found out that my T3 was getting too high but my T4 was still low. So we lowered the armour a bit and added some T4 - levoxyl, into my regimen. I feel better so far ... it's summer also and summer is much better for your thyroid (people usually need more meds in winter).

Yeah sounds like your doc is a keeper! The iron he gave you seems fine.

shena....first of alli am sorry to hear about your mc.... i cant imagine..xoxox

yeah doctors can be heartless...i remember this one dr... a year before my dx with pcos etc.... who was highly recommended..i told him all my symptoms....he took my sugar , cbc ...said all was fine...and oh honey you just need some good prozac....

i am not saying prozac is a bad thing....but what the hell.... does depression cause hair on my tummy???? not to mention the million of other things and symptoms we have...

i have to tell youits still hard to think i have hypo..since my tsh isnt crazyyyyyy high...but knowing my past probs with t3 and t4... i have to believe hypo is part of my problem..

he is going to test my estrogen/progesterone next...bc my sex binding hormone is in a menopausal level.... i really dont understand what the whole sex binding thing is ...but i am scared.

can i ask a question of you? how do you feel on an average day with pcos/thryoid ? and i have to tell you in teh drs office when he mentioned my ferritin was low... i totally thought of you bc i have read some posts with you recommending to others to get theirs checked!!!!
so just so you know.... you really help people and you have been helping me ..hugs cyster xoxo jenn

I felt like a zombie back before I went on medication. I had every complaint in the book.

Now, I have to be very careful I don't overdo it. I have limited reserves. It has been just over a year since I started treatment and it's been rocky. I think that I've finally reached a regimen that may work for me, the armour+t4. I've felt more human recently than before.

It's the mornings that are hard. I don't want to get up and it takes me longer to wake up than it did before. My brain sleeps longer than my body and I can't form coherant thought for a little while after waking up. Well, that's not true, I can, but I can't communicate it very well, and my social skills go into the toilet. Very annoying, as when my thyroid was better during the brief 3-year stint on bcp, I could just leap out of bed in the AM at 5:00 and be ready for anything!

Once I wake up, and it may take me until noon, I'm good for most of the day. After work, around 5-6 pm, I am raring and happy with life. Before meds I'd be falling asleep all day.

Hey jenn--

I take Synthroid---and a boatload of it for sure. I take 300 mcgs per day, first thing in the morning.

My TSH hovers in the 1.1 to slightly lower range now. I feel so good it's almost incomprehensible I ever felt bad! I was in grad school when I was diagnosed---I was also working and so tired, but everyone around me complained about being tired---kinda goes along with having so many things going on. So, I didn't think a thing of it. They discovered my problem as a result of a routine checkup.

I was also a zombie. To this day I have no idea how I managed to do anything--I was so spacey.

I notice when my meds need adjusting because I start feeling sluggish or hyper---I've been there before too when I was overmedicated. Also if I start putting weight on without eating more or can't even fathom getting out of bed.

Shena--have a question for you. I take magnesium and calcium together, but not in the same pill. The magnesium also helps to keep things "regular", which for me is a nice side effect. Seems like so long as I take them together it has the same effect as a single pill. Would you agree?

Kelly

Kelly, I would think so, I just use the premixed variety because it's two less pills a day
