I just found this site tonight while exploring the psocsupport site.
I was diagnosed about 3 months ago and I'm still not sure what to make of things. On one end I'm glad some one- and yes it took a FEMALE doctor to diagnose me- finally gave me some answers to the insanity that's been happening with my body over the last few years. Especially the pains in my lower areas around my right ovary.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm alone in this, I have no family to speak with. They wouldn't believe me even if I told them. What I am is scared, because I don't want to go through this alone.
I've had the glucose test and Dr V has put me on Metformin, she's wants to add some more scripts soon. The facial cream and something else. The one thing I have not done is seen the endocrinologist. For some reason, this is the part that scares me, seeing 'the specialist.'
I'm tired of being alone and around people who don't understand.
I would HIGHLY recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are excellent, and usually much better equipped at handling PCOS than OB/GYN or PCP. They are usually more up to date, because PCOS is an endocrine issue.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. The face cream is Vaniqa, which I tried and got a rash, so I couldn't use it. However, there are plenty of ppl that love it. I don't know what the other medicine would be, maybe spironolactone?
Anyway, WELCOME TO SC! There is a link on the top that says "Do I have PCOS" It has some good info!
I hope to see you around!

I haven't seen a specialist yet either and feel very comfortable with my doctor's knowledge. So for most women yes a specialist is the way to go don't feel like it is the only way to go!! Just stay informed yourself and that will help you out a lot!

Welcome!! I agree I didn't get anywhere with regular docs. They always knew about the problem but were not up to date with the most recent studies. One thing I noticed that is one of the best self help for PCOS is loosing weight. ARe you doing it thru low carb? The studies are showing that this is the best way to start to control this monster. There is a board on here with other ladies loosing weight and the different methods we are using! Good luck to you and you are definately not alone here now!

Honestly, I'm not doing must different than before aside from switching out what I drink - from sodas to water. Add in the metformin and all the walking I've been doing to get from one place to another- The weight has just been dropping off.
I think the two keys I've been doing are cutting back what I eat and increasing the water intake
