Exclamation Just got diagnosed today...

I talked to my dr on the phone, and he didn't get into too many details...

I've been reading up on this on the internet, and I don't have all the symptoms of PCOS. I have the absent periods, the cysts on my body, extremely fine hair ect., but I've never had a major issue with my weight (I'm 5'7 and I weigh about 180 or so), I'm a little overweight, but not very much. I did, however, have a very abrupt weight gain when I was 16 (about 40 lbs in three months), which he said is typical of girls with PCOS. I also do not have the body hair problems, in fact the hair all over my body is very fine and sparse. Should I get a second opinion on my diagnosis?

My major question is, my dr told me to start on Yasmin to try to regulate my hormones and periods, but I dont' want to put on weight or have my moods screwed with. He said due to the PCOS, birth control would probably have the opposite effect on me, in esscence I'd lose weight and stabilize my moods. I have a hard time believing this.

Anyone have any helpful advice? I don't have anyone to talk to about any of this, so I'm really hurting for support from people who have this disorder.

Thank you!
Amanda

Ummm...thanks for all the welcomes, but did anyone read my post? Does anyone have anything useful to say about the questions I asked? Am I in the wrong place? Asking the wrong people?

It doesn't do much good to be part of an online support group if I ask questions and everyone just says "Hi" and "Hope you find what you're looking for".

Welcome to SC! I also didn't want to start on any birth control because i worried what it would do to my already messed up homrones. Some docs do prescribe it and others rely on Metformin which is a diabetes drug that also helps with insulin resistance. Some ladies find success with regulating hormones with a lower-carb diet.

Not all cysters have all the symptoms. I don't have the cysts, but I do have the body hair problems.

What type of doc are you seeing? Gynos often treat PCOS differently than Endos do. There is a find a doc section on here if you feel that your doc insists on a treatment you aren't comfortable with. My regular doc didn't test me for insulin resistance (ir), but my gyn did. He also tested for other things and put me on Metformin. I am on a lower carb diet which along with the Met I think has helped with my hormone issues.

Here is a link to the 5 basic types of PCOS: 5 Types of PCOS

Here is a link to the Thin Cysters board for those who have PCOS, but don't struggle with excess weight: http://www.soulcysters.net/forumdisplay.php?f=40

Here is the Birth Control Board to ask specific questions about BCPs: http://www.soulcysters.net/forumdisplay.php?f=29

Here is a FAQ about all kinds of PCOS related problems and how to treat them "naturally." Kat FAQ's - Info from Kat Carney on treating PCOS naturally

Hope this helps

Welcome to SC!! Jashobeam gave you some great links.
All cysters don't have all the symptoms. I think some cysters have had success with BCP helping with weight and moods.
Sounds like you may need to see a new doc that is more knowelgable about PCOS. Take a look at the BCP forum. There is a ton of info here and you just need to surf for a while and become proactive in you care!!

Sometimes I guess people don't have the time to go into information, sorry if we seemed rude to you....

SC board is a great source of information and everything is kind of split up into different topics.... so it's best to look up the topic you need, ie questions on The Pill and post there...

Thanks guys...I think I'm a little overly sensative right now....when my Dr. called to tell me about the diagnosis I was driving, so I didn't ask any questions. He acted like it wasn't a big deal, and he's a gyno and a fertility specialist so I figured he'd know what he was talking about. Then I start looking online and see all the problems it can cause, and it really freaked me out, he didn't give me any information about it at all.

I'm not as freaked out by the infertility thing (though I might be later) as I am by the heightened risk of cancer and such. I guess I could look for an Endo dr. and see what he says, it can't hurt.

Thanks so much.

Hi and Welcome. Just to let you know, my doctor also put me on Yasmin. He told me that it is the best birth control that would help you to not gain wieght as some women do on other birth control. Feel free to contact me if you have anymore questions!

HI! I am new to all of this too. I read an article in SELF magazine and that is when I pushed for an ultrasound. My OB stated that I didn't fit the common picture of PCOS, but same with the girl in the article the ultrasound gave a whole different picture. I was diagnosed a few days ago and it floored me, even though I had a feeling. I called my OB and he also just gave me a small, fragmented story of my lab work and ultrasound and saying it looks like you may have PCOS. After looking online I wanted details and numbers of my labs. I am supposed to call him in a week after I take these progesterone pills and that is when I will approach him on details and possibly doing a insulin test on me. I have symptoms as irregular periods (sometimes only once in 3-4 months), mild acne (comes and goes), and supposedly my testosterone is only sl. elevated (his quote). I am 27, I am not over weight, but out of shape yea (5'6" and 120-125lbs.) I dont believe in the pill, cause I think it is masking the problem. I am trying healthy diet with less sugars and exercise. Good luck to the both of us. My fear is not being able to get pregnant when I want to and a future of diabetes or something.

I was diagnosed over 20 years ago and was put onto the pill, I gained a lot of weight with this, conceived very quickly after stopping the pill, and have spent a long time trying to lose the weight. I would speak to other women with PCOS who have been prescribed the pill and check how many still gain weight with it before believeing Dr's, they all told me i would lose not gain.
