Default Just a llittle curious

Do any of you hunt or fish? These are my two favorite outdoor activities. Alot of people have asked my "WHY?" This is a very good question. I do it for the pure enjoyment and solitude that one can have in doing so. Their are time's that I go hunting and/or fishing, but I don't keep/kill anything. I eat deer meat, and fish meat. Do I kill every deer I see? No. I shoot maybe 2-3 deer a year (if I am lucky), and they all get eating. Do I keep every fish I catch? Not at all. As a matter of fact. This past fall produced a good run of King Salmon in our river's. During my week stay up north on one of my favorite river's, I landed well over 50 Salmon (fresh one's) and brought home 5 or 6.

Us SPORTSMAN get a bad name from those who could care less, and poach animals.

Just a curious Outdoorsman

Howdy

Well, I dont do either anymore, tho I did fish a bit as a kid. (being a boyscout made this almost mandatory )

As for hunting, I've never done it, tho I'm by no means opposed to it. I'm very, very happy that there are sportsmen out there. Around my parents house the deer population is out of control. It's not unusal to see 20 or 30 of them at a time. It's really an issue, in terms of sheer numbers - it's very difficult to drive at night in this area.... end up going like 10mph, just to have enough time to react. It's not exactly back-country roads or anything, but as close as a suburban environment can get.

Having said that, I'm with you on the poaching bit. Killing animals and leaving them for dead is not sportsmanlike, nor should it be tolorated.

My thoughts.. anyone else?

Happy Hunting!

While I don't really do much of either, I can certainly understand the benefits of both. I haven't really tried my hand at hunting yet and fishing is a bit too slow if you ask me. I can appreciate the time to get out and have the time to think but I'm not sure if I will go those routes in the future. Personally, if I had to pick a physical activity that I enjoy being alone for, it's golf. It can be expensive so I want to try to save up for a membership or something but I really love to be out there and to have fun.

Quite honestly, I was shocked when I saw that no women had responded to this. Not really I guess...

I grew up on a game plantation. 2300 acres of woods used for both conservation and hunting, farming and timbering. I grew up eating nothing but venison or whatever daddy and the other hunters killed. I received my own shotgun at age 18, but I had been hunting long before that. I can clean my own deer! Sitting in a tree stand with my daddy is one of my happier memories.

What bothers me is the flack that I get for hunting or being part of the hunting process as a woman. Comments like "how can you be so barbaric" or "you're killing Bambi. what kind of woman are you?" are so un necessary. (luckily I have never heard them here.) We monitored the numbers of animals on the plantation, only killed what we needed for meat or to lower numbers during periods of over-population.

Do men get treated the same way for hunting, or is it because I am supposed to fill the nuturing, loving role that horrifies so many women?

And my question to them is... Have they ever eaten venison backstrap?

thanks
karen

I am proud to say that myself, my mother, and my grandmother all love to fish! We usually go for catfish. (What else would a georgia girl want???) I have no problem sitting on the lake all day. I haven't tried hunting yet, but maybe next season. I was too busy looking for a job this time. (I start my new job next week, by the way.). Just wanted to let you know that us fisher gals are out here!

My fiance introduced me to fishing and ice fishing soon after we started dating and he had me hooked, even though I didn't catch anything for months and then when I did it was the smallest little pickerel ever! I'm not as into ice fishing as regular fishing because I can't stand being out in the cold for hours on end. Haven't tried hunting yet, but that's next on his list of things to introduce me to. I know lots of women who fish and hunt up here in Massachusetts!

I've been a fisherman since I was a little boy. I haven't hunted much, but I do love the outdoors. I think that being outdoors & being "one with nature" can provide some of the most peaceful, wonderful, serene moments of your life. There are times that I've been out fishing, where I've actually felt closer to God than ever before (as weird as that might sound to some of you). There's just something about being out on an absolutely perfect day, and being that close to nature...it just makes you think, and gives you the opportunity to reflect & do some soul searching, etc. I think it's good for the soul.

Anyway, that's just my opinion on the subject...I haven't gotten to go fishing nearly as much since we had our beautiful baby girl ( but that's a trade-off I'm willing to take )...but my wife enjoys going with me sometimes, and I know as our daughter gets older, there will be times that we all go out fishing together, and just enjoy spending the time outdoors together. That's a big part of it too...just spending time with people you care about, doing something that you all enjoy....you can't beat that !!

I have sometimes been accused of shooting Bambi. I don't Bamdi, I shoot his dad. Well not with my bow, still waiting to take a buck with my bow. I personally think that most people who are against hunting, should go out and sit with a good hunter. Not one that will shoot anything that come's into view, a selective harvest if you will, but someone who will pass on a few deer, and then chose one. This is how I hunt.

Fishing and Ice Fishing are awesome. I have two shanties, a Shappel 2 man shanty and a single person flip over shanty. With a little heater, I can sit all day, stay warm, and catch fish, uhhh sometimes

Personally, I really didn't expect anyone to reply to this thread. I guess I was thinking wrong. Their is nothing more enjoyable then women in the outdoor world. Anne hunt's and fish's with me on occasion. Maybe next year, I can get her own gun, and she can start hunting more.

Thanks to all have replied

My husband hunts...as a matter of fact he just got a deer this morning..a buck! He bowhunts and shotgun and at first I was a little bothered by it, but to be honest, I would rather a deer die being hunted (NOT POACHED) then get hit by a car and suffer. I love in NJ and we are so overpopulated with deer. If you are a responsible hunter then I see nothing wrong with it. So many people makes comments that are so negative and I mostly ignore them unless they actually want to talk about it and not be closed minded. I think in our society, we are trained in a way to think that eating cows and chicken and other animals is fine because we can buy it at a grocery store...these animals are specifically raised to be slaughtered and sold at grocery stores to feed us. So what is the difference?

You cannot be in the presence of a profoundly vaccine damaged child and not know that child could be your own. And you cannot try to comfort a mother who has just buried a baby who has died from a vaccine or a disease and not know that you could be the one standing over the grave. When it happens to your child, the risks are 100 percent.

Maybe I ought to give hunting a try down the road. I am surprised there are not more people involved with golf. Lol... It is great to hear these stories and how hunting or fishing has helped out a lot more in your personal lives. I couldn't argue...

SoulDoctor,

I golf as well The warden (Anne) say's "Great, another sport for you." Just bought some new club's this summer, and hit the driving range that day. Have a nice slice going, lol. These are not exspenive club's, but being just a beginner in golf, I didn't see the need for high dollar club's, maybe down the road I will pick up some better club's. But until then I will continue advancing myself in the world of hunting and fishing

Tell your hubby congrat's on his deer. I took a nice doe on Oct 4th. But I lost a huge matriarch on opening day Oct 1st. Was sick for the rest of day and a few day's after for not finding her

Golf is a pretty neat way to spend an afternoon with a good friend or by yourself. I will never claim to be any good at it although if I put in the hard work, I probably could. I too have kind of a bad slice but only if I'm nervous about it or I overthink the shot too much. Another problem I have is a bit too much power at times. It is a good guy sport, I think.
