Default Just Prescribed Met-Some Questions and Concerns

Hi ladies. I was just diagnosed with PCOS 2 days ago. I have a 2-year-old son who I conceived no problem and when I tried to conceive #2 things weren't going so well. I went to the doc for some tests and low and behold I have PCOS. I'm kinda shocked. So anyway, I was prescribed met and after reading some of these posts, I'm getting a little nervous about taking it. I had to have my gall bladder removed shortly after my son was born and ever since have had diarrhea problems, so is met really going to make my stomach go crazy??? Also, I've been reading that it makes you really light headed and want to stay in bed all day? That may be a problem, since I have a crazy 2-year-old and also babysit a 1-year-old full time. I'm nervous but I really want to TTC #2 and it sounds like met is my best bet.

Also, I'm reading you aren't supposed to drink on met? I don't drink all the time, but I do like to go out for a few every now and then, is that out of the question now?

Oh, and one more question. Is met a drug that PCOS women are generally on permanently, or are most women only on it while TTC?

Thanks, I'm a bit nervous and overwhelmed by this diagnosis!

I was diagnosed with PCOS in May, and I just started taking Metformin this week. I also had an emergency gallbladder removal surgery about a month ago. I have had some stomach problems, but it really hasn't been that bad. I am starting out on 500 mg of Met, and I notice that I usually have to run to the bathroom 30 minutes or so after I take the pill. Other than that it isn't that big of a deal. I hope I was able to help!

Thanks for the reply. I'm interested to hear that you also had gall bladder surgery. I'm trying to figure out if I've always had PCOS, or if this is something I recently "got". Did you have pancreatitis along with your gall bladder issues? I did and that was why I needed my gall bladder out ASAP. I've been reading up about PCOS and apparently it has something to do with the way glucose is processed in the pancreas. It caught my attention when I read that since I had pancreatitis. So, is it possible that my pancreas was damaged from the pancreatitis (gall stones entering my pancreas) and that led to this? I have no idea if that's possible, (and I'm no doctor) its just something I thought of.

I've been on met for almost 2 months now. I take the XR formula & have no problems with it at all. The pharmacy accidently refilled me with the "regular" met & I was sick after only taking 1 pill.
I've drank with met, a max of 3. It just makes you feel the effects of alcohol more so you have to take it easy.
From what I was told by my endo. you take it while TTC & for the first 13 wks (??). When not TTC you should take spirlactone (sp?) because it's not safe you're pregnant.

I've been on Metformin since December, and found it has done wonders for me. Yes the week I have an upset stomach, I also felt I couldn't get to grips with eating a full meal for around a month. But, once you get passed that stage and you start noticing changes to your symptoms, I feel it's worth it!
P.s I also drink every other weekend, hasn't made me feel any worse?
P.S.P.S - I know people who also haven't experienced any problems taking metformin even after the first week!

Thanks for your replies ladies. You are making me feel much more confident about starting these meds. Now I am hearing mention of regular met and a slow release version? (Is that the XR version?) I'm guessing my doc prescribed me the regular kind because the pill bottle just says metformin 500MG tablets. I'm assuming it would say so if it was the slow release XR kind? So should I ask my doc for the other kind instead? I haven't started taking it yet, since my sister-in-law's wedding is tomorrow and I plan to party it up, I think it best to wait until after Saturday to start this.
