hello my name is jessica. i was actually diagnosed with PCOS about 6 years ago. However i havent had medical insurance and havent been able to get the proper care for it.
ive read a bit. ive been told weight loss helps assist in dealing with it. i started my battle with weight loss dec 7, 2006 and ive lost 80 pounds now.
i started birth control from planned parenthood but it made me very moody and i went off it.
im pretty sure on this board you refer to "your period" as something different. if somebody could please let me know what that is. i dont quite know any medical terms since i have been dealing with this on my own due to lack of insurance.
ive now had my girl problems for 3 weeks. its driving me crazy. i want it to go away and dont know how to get it to stop. if anybody knows of anything low cost that might help? i would appreciate it.
i look foward to trying to assist with any/all problems i can on this board, getting to know all the woman and learning as much as possible.
Hi Jessica,
There's a bunch of abbreviations found on this site here: Updated!!! Abbreviations For Newbies:)
I am new to the site too and found knowing the abbreviations is very helpful when reading through this site!
A not so medical term for your period is AF = Aunt Flo!

What have you done to lose weight so successfully? I was just diagnosed with PCOS. I am also hypothyroid. My weight has gone from 145 to 216 in a 6 year period. I've tried a lot of things to get the weight off but have never succeeded.
Do you think Wal-Mart's new $4 program would be useful to you to get Rx's that you might need?
Best of luck,
Jen

80 pounds gone? Good for you. I think I've gained that much in the last couple of years! (Okay, more like 30, but, still.) Welcome. You'll find some great resources here.
I spent so many years without health insurance, so I know a few tricks. First, you can probably find a doctor in your area that will see you on a payment plan. They don't advertise it, so you have to ask, but if your county hospital has a satellite clinic system, that's a good place to start. As little as $5 a month will keep them happy until it's paid. Your county or state may also have a program to help uninsured people pay medical bills. Call the local health department to find out.
Be sure to request generic versions of any meds you're prescribed (Usually the doc just has to sign on the line that says "allow generic substitution.) They're the same thing, minus the clever marketing campaign. There are also prescription assistance plans, I think someone mentioned the Wal-Mart one, but there's also PPA (partnership for prescription assistance), and Merck has their own PA department. You'll just have to look them up on the web and do some negotiating, but you can get some of your medicines completely paid for, especially if they're cheap, which my PCOS ones have been so far.
we dont have walmarts here like other states do. the walmarts here are ghetto and white trash and i wont walk into it. stuff is always on the floor, clothes are never hung up. the cashiers are slow and dont know how to ring you up. im more of a traget girl so i know not about walmart
i can actually get health insurance for free its just a matter of not being lazy and going down to the town to request another copy of my birth certificate. im going to have to do that because this period things is really putting a damper on my sex life.
so many things have contributed to my weight loss but i would have to say the three main things. weight watchers meetings (ive really gotten to know the people there), my boyfriend who started this journey with me (he lost his weight a long time ago though), and learning this isnt a diet its a way of eating healthy and to enjoy myself.
plessthanpointohfive: my weight jumped like that too. as soon as i turned 18 i just started putting the pounds on. i couldnt control it. was awful. i was prob in the 160's when i was 18 and when i started this diet at 24 i was 254. i couldnt breath walking up the strais. i was so lazy and i just sat at my computer. not to mention i hid from life. my friends would ask me to go out but i would never want to. i remember being called the heavyset girl when i was at a bar once. it was my last straw. losing weight is 100% mental for me. i never want to go back to that "heavyset girl".

I'm in pretty good aerobic shape because I walk so much. But there have been times when I was so depressed about my weight that I became a lump.
For you it's being the "heavyset girl". For me it's being married to a professor of exercise physiology who visibly fit and muscular. I'm EMBARRASSED to be married to a man like that because I sooooo don't look like his match. The good thing is that he says he still find me beautiful. But I HATE the double looks and speculation on people's faces when they see us together. I know that sounds paranoid. I don't think everyone on the street and their mother even notices it when we're together. It's more like the people he knows from work and teaching and when they meet me LATER...the comments are usually, "Man, you're not how I pictured...".
Anyway, I am so glad for you that you've managed to get it together. I hope now that I am being treated I can do the same...
