I just started Met today. I got my offical PCOS DX on thursday and Dr prescribed me 500mg and I started today. The pharmacist said that my dose is considered "low". I am not sure what that meant until I came on here and saw that most of you cysters are on 1500mg or more.
Dr did not mention increasing my dose as of yet, but then he is on vacation this week. I guess I am just anxious to get the ball rolling again to TTC. But maybe all I need is 500mg since I have always O'd in the past. In fact this whole diagnosis was such a shock. I have 3 kids and was just wanting to TTC # 4 when AF just would not arrive and I was not Oing. Went to the Dr expecting him to tell me it had to do with my recent weaning of my DS and was shocked to hear the words PCOS.
Anyone have words of support or success stories that would help me out?
Also, how do I know if I need to up my Met dose? What questions should I ask my DR when he gets back in town?
Thanks~

With Metformin, it's best to start low at 500mg because it can play a number on your stomach. Some women react adversely too it...nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. So it's best to start low, at 500mg, and gradually work your way up to 1500mg or more.
Plus, it also depends on how much your body needs. You may only need 500mg in order for it to work well on you, or you may need more. So it's OK to start small and work up in dosage.

TTC since August 2004
Stopped TTC May 2008, trying to regulate hormones and lose weight before trying again.
I really want to have a baby before the end of 2010. This means I need to lose alot of weight and get my PCOS under control.
My sister started at 500 and went up to 1500. It is odd that the Dr did not even explain you may need a larger dose if you do not respond. He may have a whole different plan for you depending on your case. Either way, I would not worry 500 is a normal starting dose.

My dr started me out on 500mg in which im starting it in a few minutes lol. On my pill bottle it explains to take 500mg first week, 1000mg the second week, and 1500mg the third + weeks. but she also explained to me how to increase up to the 3rd week. im anxious though to start it just worried about the runs and dizziness cause i already have them symtoms. i have some kind of bowel problem anyways. cant eat cheese, lettuce, corn, etc. or i get the runs. Good luck hun and take care

My instructions from my Dr when I first started taking it was to take one 500 mg pill a day for a week, then up the dosage to 1000 mg a day. After 3 months, he increased my dosage to 2000 mg a day.

When I started met 10 years ago I started with 500mg for a week then 1000 for 2 and then 1500. I went on and off it a few times during the 10 years (insurance reasons) and finally a year ago I went back on it. I am only taking 1000mg and it seems to work great. My symptoms are slight and since we have been ttc my cycles became regular (probably also due to losing weight) I have also o'ed.
I think everyone needs to find the dose that is right for them. If you have a good Dr. that you trust then they should be able to work with you to find the right amount.
Thanks cysters! I am doing Ok on the Met. The only s/e I have are the diarreah a couple times a day and if I don't eat at regular intravals I get nauseated. But as soon as I eat I feel fine. I hope that is all the s/e I get from the Met. Those things I can deal with. The diarreah isn't even that bad. No cramping or anything, just watery instead of solid. (tmi, sorry).
Thanks for your input on the dosage. I will be calling the Dr next week to discuss his plan for upping the dose or whatever.

I started out on the 500 XR and Byetta. But when I refused to buy anymore Byetta (argument with presc. carrier), my doc switched to the regular metformin and gradual increase, I was 1000 a day for 2 months, now this week she switch me to 1700 (850 2x a day). I havent' had any side effects this week other than wanting to sleep later in the day and a slight headache. Thank God! When I go back in Sept. I'm looking for her to leave me at the same amount but start me on clomid, as long as the blood test and annual comes back fine. Good luck with it!

I just started Met 1000 yesterday. I was hella worried about s/e's. But thankfully there have been none yet. I dont know if it's too soon to tell. I havent taken it this morning yet. I'm working and haven't had time to run and get some breakfast to take with it. I have my fingers crossed hoping that this will be a success. I wish you girls luck.
