I am 16, and have only recieved my period twice in my life and they were exactly a year apart. Finally I got sent to a gyno and had a bunch of blood drawn and had a ultrasound. My gyno came to the conclusion that I do not quite have PCOS, mainly having to do with the fact that I am 16, but I have pretty much all the symptoms except for cysts and my gluclose and glucose tolerance is fairly normal. But my gyno is treating me as though I did have it, so that it will make things easier for me down the road. To the best of my knowledge, no one in my family has had this. My maternal grandma did have some sort of thyroid illness, but I do not know the details on that.
I am currently on the birthcontrol pill Yasmin, which I have read a lot of PCOS patients are put on. I have to say that the pill has made me feel so much more together and just more balanced. Like I am all in sync. I started my first real period five days ago.
My main question here is this, my period has been EXTREMELY heavy. it has been heavy for 3 days straight. I leak through super pads at night. I have to change them every 2 hours or so. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so is it only for the first cycle because of the past years of no menstration? I hear that cycles only last 3-5 days....and I am so ready for it to be over!
I also know that I may start taking glucophage, based on what the endochrinologist says.
I went on BCP at 16 for the very same reason and they too told me I didnt' have it then, but had some of the symptoms (now at 30 full blown PCOS). WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF AF!! I spent about 10 yrs on the pill and sometimes it's heavy lasting 5-7 days and you bleed through, and sometimes it's very light lasting only 3 days or so. There is no rhyme or reason...I did notice though that after I was on the same pill for a while your body does adjust and by the end of the 10 yrs my periods would last like 1-2 days. Every once in a while I would get a blow out...but for the most part I could tell you that on the 3rd green pill I would get it and it would last till the 5 or 6th green pill!! You will figure it out...just be prepared for the BLOW OUT always...better safe than sorry!!
Stormy~

Welcome.
I too was put on birth control at 16 for non-existant periods. Man, did it ever make the periods heavy.
But, I refuse to do birth control..!!..They only mask the symptoms not help them. I think they messed my hormones up even worse. I became a totally different person. I will never ever get back on birth control...
I've been on Metformin (generic of Gluophage) for over a year now and besides getting past the side effects it has helped tremendously. Regular AF, hormones straightned out, helps with insulin, ect.
You can have PCOS at 16. Alot of times PCOS is heriditary.
Many cysters here have had to have several second opinions before they were satisfied with thier results.
Glad you found us. You will come to find out how helpful this site is.
Also, there is a teen section at the bottom you should check out. Alot of girls your age with PCOS.

I couldn't imagine trying to digest all this information at 16! It's good you found out early and are getting treatment. A lot of us cysters didn't find out or were misdiagnosed for a long time. I'm glad you're seeing an endocrinologist because PCOS deals mainly with hormones. You're definitely on the right track.
Sometimes the Pill can make things worse for a woman with PCOS because our hormones are screwy anyway, and the Pill can make them even more wacky. But since you're seeing an endo, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just be aware that because of our weird hormones, sometimes the Pill is not always effective. If you're having sex, make sure to use a condom, too. And if you feel like it's making you have mood swings or just not feel like yourself, talk to your doc.
It's totally normal for your period to be heavy after not having one for so long. Every woman's cycle is different. Most start out with spotting or a light flow the first day that leads to heavier bleeding for a day or two, then starts to taper off for a day and then is usually gone or lightly spotting the next day. However, that's not always the case. Some women go 7-10 days and bleed heavily for most of it, others only bleed for a day or two. As you have more cycles, you'll get a better idea of how yours will be. Talk to your doc if you pass any really big clots (like golf ball size) or if you go through a super pad in like half an hour. Every 2 hours sounds about right during the day, and I usually have to get up & change at least once at night, sometimes more. Sounds pretty normal to me.
Also, you don't have to have ALL the symptoms to have the syndrome. I think your gyno is right on the money.
