Hi everyone... I havent been in this forum in over 3 years or more... but I just wanted to share my story:
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago. I had all the symptoms, I gained about 70-80 lbs... hairloss, hair growth in places where I never had hair, and ofcourse stopped getting my period for almost 3 years (only when I would take medication would it come. My doctor prescribed Metformin, Chlomid (when hubby and I were thinking about getting pregnant) and maybe some other meds that I now forgot about. My doctor said I will have a hard time losing weight no matter how much I diet because of my condition.
About 3 years ago.. I went on a cruise with hubby and when I got home I couldnt walk... my right ankle was swollen 3x its size.. I thought I sprained my ankle climbing the pyramids in Mexico (went to Cancun), visited my doctor and he said i got GOUT!!! well I know it had nothing to do with PCOS but I thought it was because I was overweight and I had to do something about it... I had to lose the weight.. no matter what my doctor said that it would be nearly impossible because of PCOS. I weighed 203 lbs... I'm 5'2'' tall.
Before PCOS the most I weighed was 140.
Well that month i decided I can at least try to lose weight ... I walked 10 minutes a day on my treadmill everyday (a treadmill that I havent used in 3 yrs!)... made sure I ate less than 2500 calories a day and drank a gallon or more of water a day... NO drugs, No diet pills, no diet plans, nothing!. The 2nd week it got easy and I was doing 15 minutes a day everyday... the 3rd week I did 20 minutes everyday... by the end of the month.. I was up to walking (not even fast just leisurely walking) 30 minutes a day and eating 2500 cal/day, 1 gallon water a day.
I lost 8 lbs the first month...
The 2nd month still walking 30 mins a day.. maybe with a bit of an incline now and faster.. (the more it got easier the more I pushed myself to make it harder) .. I lost 12 lbs..
The 3rd month I lost a total of 25 lbs... and without drugs LO AND BEHOLD!! hallelujah!!!... I got my period!!! Naturally in more than 3 years!!
When I got my period... the weight just like disappeard... I lost a total of 70 lbs in 10 months... and my period have been on the clock!!!!! I can even tell what day it would come... My doctor said I dont have PCOS anymore! and I basically cured myself!
I am now 125 lbs and very athletic and toned... dont let the weight fool you... I'm a size 2 and very toned, I work out maybe 2-3 times a month, cardio lifting weights... and believe it or not... I do not diet at all.. and I actually eat like a pig!! hahaha!!! I eat 6-7 times a day... I dont deprive myself of my fave foods chocolate, pasta etc... everything is in moderation.
I have been the same weight for almost 2 years.... PCOS is history.
Just wanted to share.
Please. if you have any questions email me
Good Luck and God Bless to everyone... Lesson learned... anything is possible...
I just wanted to add that PCOS is not something that can just be cured. You can make it get better but deep down it's still there. If you ever let yourself go, it would come right back.
Congrats again!!

I put my trust in The Lord and i know He WILL bless us!!!
That is great news, congrats! I wonder if being a bit underweight causes PCOS? I am 5'7" and 110 pounds and have serious PCOS/period issues. Do you suppose weight gain (if I can do it) would help at all? Aside from the irregular period problem I have facial acne (clearing with spiro) and some chin and moustache hair.
bookyone- I was told by my gyn and my acupunturist to gain weight. I was always right between 115 and 120 and I'm 5'7". I may have had pcos forever, we're not sure. I was irregular since puberty so docs and my mom had me on bcp starting at age 14. At age 26 I went off bcp because they had started making me crazy. I didn't get periods at all. So I was diagnosed with pcos. I new something was wrong, but never faced it because it was easier not to. My husband was supportive of me going off bcp so I finally was able to. So, now, 2+ years later, I have finally learned all I need to about the women's body and feel that I understand how it all works. I have decided not to use medications YET and have been good at changing my lifestyle. Never being overweight, it was hard to think that diet and exercise could help me. I do believe that in some scenerios that is the way to get back to "normal". For those of us who are underweight and generally healthy, it's harder to find the right balance. I understand that body fat is very important to a healthy cycle. If you are too low, it's affected if you're too high it's affected. So, grrrrrrrr, is all I can say! I changed jobs this year which cut out 99% of my stress and immediately got my first natural period in 2 years. 4 months later and 4 periods later, this months it's MIA and nothing has changed.
So.... in a nutshell, to answer your question, weight gain COULD help you, but finding the balance will be hard. Reduce stress, eat HEALTHY (the 6 small healthy meals a day is a good routine) and get at least 3 days of exercise a week. By exercise I mean anything that will increase blood flow- brisk walking, jogging, swimming, etc... Being small, it's important to take in more calories than someone trying to loose weight, but not exercising too much where you will reduce your bodyfat. Stay healthy and reduce stress and maybe you'll see a difference.
Good luck!
oh yeah---- GREAT JOB GIN GIN!!!
That is excellent news. You are an inspiration to many women. I wish more women could be as motivated and successful as you!
Keep it up for a long healthy life!
I also helped myself out abit. Ok i haven't cured my pcos, but i lost 4 stone after giving up on TTC last time round.
I now have a cycle which i didn't before losing the weight.
I feel stronger and healthier.
And i'm now TTC again!
Hopefully losing the weight (and keeping it off for 2 years) has helped increase my chances of concieving this time.
Congrats again

From studies it seems that PCOS is genetic. Even if you have no symptoms you should keep in mind that it's still in your genes. My grandmother was thin, VERY fertile and had no symptoms of PCOS. Still I'm certain that she carried the gene and passed it to my Mom who passed it to me. All three of my grandmother's sisters were diabetic or prediabetic and all had weight around the middle.
In high school and college when I was walking a lot and dieting MOST of my symptoms went away. They returned before I graduated college. I am on a lower carb diet and have lost almost 60 pounds, but I still have symptoms. I think women with PCOS can sometimes have a period of time when they are almost in remission, then come back out of it.
Congrats GinGin!!!! I am so happy for you!!! Don't worry about TTC, you will have no problem...I can tell you get what you want, one way or another!!=) You were a very driven person to be able to lose the weight. I am trying to lose weight and I hope that I can stay motivated like you did! I wish you the best of luck in TTC!!!=)

Yep, it's in our genes...we can keep it under control I believe through diet...I've been doing low carbs and no sugars...I know that when I get my weight down you wouldn't even know that I had PCOS...just that my cycles are still 35 days, instead of being 50 days...it's going to be something to try to keep under control through diet for the rest of my life.

GinGin..CONGRATULATIONS for getting your PCOS under control........but I agree with the 2 that told you it can't be cured. Any good Doctor would have told you that. It's like Diabetes...you can control it but not cure it.
I am happy that you are doing well..

ok if your saying ur cured from just exercise then why am i not cured. i walk at least 6 blocks a day. and all the doctors and all the information say that you cant be cured of pcos its always there. but im glad for u if you say ur cured but i would still have cancer tests and all the rest to make sure i didnt come up with anything
my thing is your saying ur cured from an uncurable thing how does that work
