Default Just wondering about tests and being diagnosed with PCOS...

Hi, I’m new and sorry about the general title. I think this website its great and the members are so wonderful, thanks for the stories! So anyways, I have been having issues with irregular periods for a while now (I’m 20) and went to my doctor recently to have a ultrasound done to see if I could have PCOS. Well when the results came back they didn’t see anything on the ultrasound that looked like PCOS. So when talking to my doc again he stated they didn’t find anything but they needed to do an internal ultrasound to see if its PCOS because the one just on top of the stomach can't tell or diagnose PCOS. So then why would he not send me for that one from the start? So I’m just wondering if this is true that you need and inter-vaginal ultrasound to diagnose PCOS or see cysts on the ovaries, or if they may have messed up the test as a result. I’m worried because what the nurse doing the ultrasound said was very different then what was given to my doctor. Just wondering if they can detect cysts and PCOS from and ultrasound on the stomach? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im very confused

Hi there.

First off, welcome to the site. Loads of info and great gals.
I needed an internal ultrasound for the Gynae to see the cysts on my ovaries, and I have the classic string of pearls on both of them (more on the left than the right, to many to count)
They never did an external ultrasound on me so I'm not sure why they would suggest that, although my friend has a cyst on her ovary (not PCO's) and they saw it with an external. The internal ultrasound is obviously a more invasive procedure and maybe they thought they might be able to catch it from the outside.
By the way, you don't necessarily need to have cysts on your ovaries to have PCO's.

Hope this helps.... hugs
