I'm new here, but I've know that I have PCOS since I was sixteen. I am now 22. I have been growing hair in unwanted places since I was six. I remember my aunt telling me that I wasn't like my cousins b/c they didn't get hair under their arms until they were a lot older. I remember being told about my sideburns when I was in the third grade, and since then, I have grown a full beard. Its not long, though, I never let it grow.
I have used a lot of products like Nair; my mom gave me the kind for the legs! That worked a bit, but burned my face and smelled bad. I then used Veet for a while, and I liked that better, but after a while, it just didn't work as well. And I just wanted it all to be gone- -I was twelve by then. My mother got me some wax that was self-pullable (w/out the cloth) but it was extremely painful and tedious. I started crying and she threw a razor at me, so from then all through my high-school years and my college years, I shaved. Every morning I got up and shaved my face and by noon, the hair was growing back. My other cure was makeup, which I still cannot leave the house without. I use Revlon non-rubbing off liquid. It's the best for that. I finally went to a beautician and had my face waxed when I was 19 and it sorely hurt. But now, I am waxing myself with no pain. The hair still grows, though, and I want it all gone.
Yesterday, I was on the Early Show website in the beauty section. I came across something called Kalo mist, and lotion. The product is supposed to reduce the thickness of the hair, no matter where, until it no longer grows. This reminds me of Epil-Stop, which absolutely does not work, but I would try it. I was wondering if anyone else has tried, or heard of Kalo mist/lotion?
Hi I'm 21 and I've been dealing with symptoms since I was 11. I tried to get my doctor to diagnose me when I was 18 but she said I didn't have it. Another one did when I was 20 but she didn't want to do an ultrasound to check for cysts or anything and so I'm actually visiting a 3rd doctor today.
I've never tried Kalo Cream but have you considered vaniqua? I used it for awhile but it gave my horrible cystic acne which can happen but it isn't a common side effect. You might want to consider something more permanent like laser treatment and laser. I did laser for 3 years and felt it was ineffective. I was told however nothing really would be till I was about 21 or so. If you do electrology just make sure you get someone who is certified, experienced, and who uses the blend method. You may be able to get a doctor to refer you. It can be expensive but I think its worth the extra money.
I tried electrolysis, too, when I was 18. It didn't work for me, maybe b/c I wasn't 21 yet, either. I didn't know that that may have an effect. It was just too painful and I was seeing no results. Waxing has been the best for me. I thought if I tried the Kalo lotion that it would be like electrolysis w/out the pain. Also, the lady who was doing my electrolysis said that I may scar and that would be no better, since I have darkness on my face from when I was shaving it. I am also looking for somthing to lighten the darker areas. But the Kalo lotion is on amazon.com, so I think I'll give it a try. I've heard of Vaniqa, but my doctor said that she would only give that to me as a last resort if the Glucophage and Spironalactone (spelling) didn't work by themselves. I stopped taking the two pills b/c the Glucophage was tying my stomach in knots and every other hour I had to spend in the bathroom. It was horrible. But, I want to try the pills again, and I have a new doc b/c the old one left.
Thats ridiculous your doctor wouldn't give you vaniqa. In my looking into it I don't think there's anything particularly bad about it. It is expensive but I think if something might help a doctor should let you try it.
I think age does make a different because even though PCOS people have wacky hormones anyways they're even less stable when you're younger. I know electrology can be painful but some do offer numbing cream. The lady who does mine has cool air blowing out from around the needle so its blowing on your face on the exact spot she's zapping which definately helps a lot. I'm pretty lucky because I dont stay red that long afterwords but it can hurt a lot, but the hair bothers me so much I'll endure whatever pain necessary to get rid of it. Honestly if there was some kind of surgery to rid myself of hte hair I would have done it.
Some women have had success on Yasmin birth control. I did it for over a year and it didn't make much difference in my face although I did notice that I could actually shave my legs and go a couple of days without them feeling stubbly. Before and after when I shave I can't even go a whole day with them staying smooth.
You may not be up for trying electrology again but if you do make sure you research it. I think thats the key in effectiveness. Your doctor might be able to refer you to someone and you should sit down and have a consultation with a couple to see who you best like. I really like the lady I have because after every 6 treatments we do a hair/density growth to see if its effective or not to see if I'm wasting my money or not.
You can scar but if you put ice packs on the area afterwords and se antibiotic ointment after for a couple of days it should be ok and your electrologist should be able to tell you how to minimize the possibilities.
One day someone's going to figure out how to get rid of hair pain-free and permanently.
Thanks mlh. I think the reason why my doc wouldn't give me vaniqua was b/c she said it didn't work for some. That's the thing. Some things work well for some people, but for others, it's a waste of time. I will take your advice for looking into getting electrolysis. The lady that I went to was old and her equipment was a bit old, but she was certified and seemed to be reputable. However, she only had two choices of method- -she could either use a machine that had a single needle, or one with like three needles. She used the one needle machine so that it would hurt less. I don't know. I didn't like it at all and I gave up after two tries. I am willing to look up a better place, but I want to try the Kalo Lotion first.
