HER SUGAR-SURVIVOR STORY
In 1995, Kathryn "Kat" Carney was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). And the last place she thought she'd be was in front of a camera each week as a health reporter for CNN Headline News. "I weighed 220 pounds. I was losing hair from my head but growing it on my chin," Carney says.
While she treated her condition with medication, she was unhappy with its side effects, which included sweating, weight gain, and mood swings. "I could be crying one minute and wanting to tear somebody's head off the next," says Carney. It was at this point that she decided to take her health into her own hands.
"I read everything on PCOS that I could find and began communicating online with PCOS support groups," she says. "I also learned the difference between healthful and unhealthful carbohydrates. I started eating a lot more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods and cutting back on foods high in sugar and white flour." She also made a serious commitment to exercise, doing cardio, strength training, and stretching six days a week.
Fourteen months and minus 90 pounds later, Carney's new doctor was amazed and delighted to find that her "new" body was symptom-free. "I can still have mild relapses if I allow stress to steer my diet off-course, or I start to miss too many workouts," she says. "But this only shows me how important these things are."
Carney has a message for other women caught in the physical and psychological web woven by PCOS: You can break free. "Learn all you can about the condition, seek support from other women with PCOS, and take action," she says. "Diet and exercise can be just as important for overcoming this condition as any meds your doctor may prescribe."
If your doctor seems insensitive to your input or fails to keep up with the latest PCOS research, "find a new doctor," Carney says. "We're learning more about PCOS every day, and much of it supports the value of lifestyle changes. I had to go through 11 doctors before finding one who respected what I was doing or was willing to treat my condition with the individual attention I felt it deserved. PCOS affects every woman differently, which is important for women as well as their doctors to know."
