Yesterday I decided to increase my dose from 1500 mg (which is a dose on which I have very few side effects) to 2000 mg. When I woke up this morning my kidneys seriously hurt. Now I'm remembering that this is one of the side effects I had before when I took 2000 mg a day.
I took the metformin with a lot of water, so I don't think that's the problem. But how does metformin affect the kidneys? If it's making my kidneys hurt, is that a sign of anything wrong?
I'm not sure but my kidneys hurt too. Are you taking the XR? I thought maybe it was my kidney stones but I went off the Met and it quit until I started back.
I find what you have written concerning. I know that people who have kidney problems shouldn't take met. Did both your doctors do thorough investigations into the function of your kidneys - to see if they are working right - before they prescribed met for you? I think if your kidneys are hurting you should be talking to your doctor about it - it may be serious.
Please remember I'm not a doctor - I'm just going on what I've read about metformin and kidney function. My sister has kidney problems and I am concerned about her getting treatment for PCOS (I think she has it, but she hasn't been tested yet) since the doctors wouldn't let her take metformin - they would consider it too much of a risk.
I hope this helps... sorry it is a bit alarming.

Don't take the chance. Anytine you deal with something unexpected with a medication, it's worth it to call your Dr. It could be nothing, but it's not a risk I'd want to take on a serious medication.
Call your Dr and he can hopefully ease your mind.

This post scared me because I am having pain too.I called my pharmacist (because it's easier to get to speak with him) and he told me not to take it until I spoke to my doctor. So by this time I was realy freaking out and called and talked to my doctor who said it may be an early sighn of infection but if it is still there in a week to come in for a urin dip. She thinks it is just my body adapting to met since this is only my 3rd week on it.
