I hurt my knee three weeks ago yesterday. I had an MRI done on it last week. They said that the doctor looked at it, but didn't see anything to worry about, but wanted to put me on anti inflammatory pills. 800 mgs three times a day! I know this is common because my mother hurt her knee and they did the same thing. They said that if it doesn't get better in a couple weeks to call an orthopedic surgeon. This isn't the first time that "surgeon" has been mentioned.
I am scared to death about the possibility of having surgery. I don't think I could handle it. I can't see being able to calmly sit there if they only use a local, but I had such a horrible experience the last time I was knocked out at the dentist's office - basically I freaked out coming out of it and don't remember it. They are going to have to sedate me heavily in either situation, but I am sooooo scared that it might come to that.
I am hoping that since I can still walk on it that it isn't hurt bad enough to have surgery, maybe just some PT. It's just the possibility of it makes me want to cry. I have some names of doctors to call that specialize in knees (the benefits of knowing someone in the medical industry that isn't a doctor ) but it doesn't comfort me any.
Has anyone ever had anything done to their knee? Any words of advice or opinions?
I just wanted you to know someone was thinking about you and I hope your pain is managable!
freaking out with going under might be helpd if they use two types of anethesia, one to knock you out one to soothe/calm you...that's what they do for me. Before surgery they give me two pills or a shot and I feel all warm and stuff then I talk with family, blah blah blah then I wheeled into the surgery room.
Hope this helps a bit, take care cyster!

My brother is 5 years older than me and although very athletic he kept dislocating his one knee, he had brace after brace. He would wear them at first then stop, eventually they put him in a cast from his groin down around his foot (thinking that will get him to stop moving his leg) and he cut the foot off, so he could move his foot...LOL!! They told him the only way to repair his knee after the many dislocations and not wearing the braces long enough was surgery...
He thought about it...and declined, that was many, many years ago and his knee is great!! he is still very athletic playing lacross and I think all he did was work on his knee, like PT keeping the muscles strong...Just a thought!!
Surgery isn't always the best option!!

I just wanted to say that I really feel for you! I was so scared before I had my gallbladder out! I had never had surgery, never even been given any kind of anesthesia. Most people tried to be comforting, they said, oh if you've had babies then surgery won't be a big deal at all. And I was thinking, but surgery is what I'm facing right now! Anyway, I was fortunate to have an anesthesiologist who is a friend of ours who took care of me in the OR. He gave me some sort of shot (not sure what it was exactly, sorry!) It made me absolutely not care what they were about to do! I felt sleepy and warm too. I also remember nothing from the time they began to wheel me to the OR until when I woke up in recovery! I was worried about everything from being violent when I woke up to vomiting from the meds! So he was careful to give me meds (again, I'm not sure what exactly) that really made the transition smooth. And the pain afterward was nowhere near as bad as when I had the gallbladder attacks!
So I hope you won't need surgery, but if you do, just know that you can do it! We'll all be rooting for you here, too!

I haven't had any major surgery. But, I do feel your pain. My husband has had several surgeries and I always thought "how can you do this?" I have always been so scared of anesthesia. Then a couple of years ago I had to go under w/anesthesia to have a tooth pulled. I was very surprised by the outcome. It wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be. The only bad part was that I had peed on myself while I was under. lol Oh my goodness... how did that happen? I was a little sick at the time and the nurse said it probably happened when I was coughing during recovery. Oops! Like I said that was pretty embarassing. Anyways, after the procedure I was soooo proud of myself for doing it. I now had experienced something that I thought I would never be able to do. Though, I know it was a very short time in comparison to something like a knee surgery or something else. My point... Pray for the best. And if you have to have surgery you will be amazed at what you can do. YOU CAN DO IT!!! Good luck and take loving care of yourself.

I have never been in the situation but I wanted to say I hope everything goes well and that you will not need surgery. And if by chance you do, that you have a speedy recovery. Keep us posted!

I think you don't have anything to worry about. If they only use local, then you can ask for mild sedative. My father had the same thing done, and he said that with the sedative, then he was doing great, infact even watching the T.V. and talking with the Surgeon. And, What could be better then after your surgery, everyone wanting to help you and make you feel better, and getting you things...doing everything for you. So...don't worry about it if it does need to happen, things won't be as bad as it could be.

Sorry to hear about your knee. I hope the ibuprofen helps a lot!
