I am new to soucysters. I recently discoverered that I have PCOS. All the signs were there, but none of my doctors ever talked to me about what was going on with my body.
When I was 10, I started puberty. I would go 3 to 4 weeks with a period and then have a 2 week break. This cycle continued for 7 months. When my mom called my doctor all he said was " Have her take iron pills so she will not get weak." I was very active in sports in middle school and high school (running close to 15 to 20 miles a week) so when I kept missing periods the doctors assumed that it was due to a lack of body fat. When I started college I went to and OBGYN for my first pap smear. She wanted to test my blood. I was producing more testosterone for a woman and not a normal amount of estrogen. She advised that I get on Birth Control to become regular. That was fine for a while, but about my 3rd year in college I gained 30 pounds in 4 months. I didn't know what was going on. Since then I have gained 15 more. I run 1 mile every 3 days and eat less than 1800 calories but nothing changes. I have tried doing this for 2 months and I still weigh the same.
I talked to my cousin about my weight issue and lack of periods. She started asking me questions about acne and unwanted hair on my body. Turns out that she was diagnosed with PCOS when she and her husband were trying for a baby. Since studies show that it is something that can be inherrited, I checked it out. I have all the major signs. I find it to be a relief in some ways, but sad in others.
Does anyone have any advice on trying to loose weight while on birth control with PCOS. I am tired for feeling this way and looking this way.
Anything would be greatlly appreciated.
